Default How do i turn my ipod into an external hard drive?

    Hey guys,

i just picked up a 160gb ipod classic for $100. I'm trying to find a way to use it as an external hard drive (drag and drop files into the root folder) and also retain the actual ipod function (basically be able to use it as a normal ipod on the bus, at school, in my car plugged to my ipod compatible stereo)

I would love to use this as an external hard drive with a headphone port on it, basically...

is it possible? how do i do it?

However, none of the results adress the issue i'm having.

What ive found on google up to now allows me to store stuff on the ipod as it was a hard drive, but my music still needs itunes to be managed. I want to drag and drop songs into the ipod drive and then listen to those songs on my ipod, or use those same songs while dj'ing.

    is that even possible?

You open iTunes and click on whatever you iPod is named and under summary click the checkbox that says Enable Disk Use. That's it. If your on a Mac your iPod will now show up on your desktop, if your on a PC open up My Computer and scroll down past your normal drives to your external drives and you should be able to see it. You can add anything you want to it but I don't recommend messing with any of the files that are already there unless you want to mess up your MP3's that are also on there. Usually I just make a bunch new folders and use it like a giant USB stick.

    OR.

You can reset it by holding the menu + center buttons, then pressing the play/pause + center buttons to boot the iPod into disk mode: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363

    Thanks guys.

    ive finally solved this.

I completely removed the apple firmware from the ipod and was able to install Rockbox with EmCORE bootloader. Nothing the Apple support would commend. Now my ipod works like an oldschool mp3 player! I can manage my entire library through my windows explorer, i can listen to all of it through my ipod AND i can use it as an external hard drive for traktor!

I used to like SharePod - but I dunno if it works properly on newer iPods? Stupid Apple... why can't they make a product that doesn't need hacking/jailbreaking?

Hey! I use my rockbox-ed iPod as a portable HDD as well Loading tracks in traktor could be a bit slow with rockbox when you are using its own USB drive mode, so you can try using the original apple disk mode instead for faster transfers (works for me).
