Default Am I not a DJ?

    Hi everyone,

I read this forum frequently and always find a new way to use my equipment, an amazing account to follow on SoundCloud, or something musically inspiring.

I question whether I myself am a DJ because I don't perform other people's recorded work - in other words, I compose everything I perform. I play some of the same venues, including bars and clubs. Some of the techniques that many of you use are mainstays of my art, and I use equipment popular with many DJs, like Ableton Suite 8, my Akai APC40, and my Oxygen 61. However, I also don't scratch, or use anything disc shaped, like jog wheels or turntables in my performance.

I'd also like to ask whether you think it matters or is really important whether one calls himself a DJ, and what matters to or defines being a DJ to you.

    Thanks,
    Sam

It doesnt matter. As deadmau5 says, "I'm not a DJ, there are no jockey-ing of discs." lol

I dont have DJ in my performance name because I consider myself a producer first and I "spin" with an S2 or Twitch. But when people ask what I do I say Im a DJ just ebcause its easier to say "Oh I'm an electronic music performer"

"DJ" doesnt mean what it did 10 years ago.

EMP suits nice to me too...
    I'm a Digital DJ
    I'm a Electronic Music Performer
    I'm a Controllerist

In the end the easier is to say you are a DJ or a Producer...

Here in Brazil organizers pays more to a producer playing pré-recorded sets on ableton live

The term DJ came from the time of Vinyl, and now 90% of all DJ's dont use it and they dont even manufacture technics anymore.

You are someone who plays music live. Period.
