Default What do I not know I'm missing?

There are known knowns, things I know, and there are known unknowns, things I know I don't know. But then, there are unknown unknowns, things I don't know I don't know!!

For example, I know how to beatmatch!

And I know that I can create a "dramatic sweep" or "echo freeze" effect, though it's unknown at this time how to do that.

But what other things, as a beginner DJ, should I be aware of that exist, and that I can use? Playing with Traktor is like playing with chemicals... I know things can be done and the results can be spectacular, but I don't know even what chemicals I have in front of me.

Also, if someone can tell me how to find out what button is mapped to what function in Traktor, that would be great, because my Mixtrack Pro has a knob that can be pressed in, and I'm not sure what I'm doing when I press it, so I never press it. Also, the "delete" button, I'm not sure what it does since the hotcues are actually EQ kills.

It kinda sounds like you're dabbling in Chemicals and Traktor. If that's the case, explore and have fun but don't push the red button, the big shiny red button. Just leave that one alone.

    "Which Mixtrack is yours?"
"It's the one that says Bad Motherfucker"

Also, it sounds like you just need a basic overview of Traktor. Have you tried reading the manual? If that doesn't cut it, get the Traktor Bible.

    Start with the basics.

    A -> B transitions.

Beatmatch the tracks and make sure you can transition well.

Then add something new to it.....like a variation of the transition.
EG, use the Freeze to transition.

Play with it at home. You can't break it.

Play a long loop and try out all the FX.
Hear what sounds good and try and figure out how you can use it in your set.

Make a noise at home...thats why its called practice.

Also, check out the tutorial vids ALL over this forum on the different aspects of Traktor.

Its ALL here. We all started with Traktor at some point and were as 'green' as you were.

Very reassuring, thank you! Does the traktor manual discuss how to do the 'freeze'?? I'm having issues creating the buildups as I hear them in my head. As in, I've only become proficient with gator, beatmasher2, and flanger/phaser.
