Default S4 Midi Mode jogwheel effects

Hi - I'm a new S4 user and tried both the DJTT and Scamo's jogwheel S4 fx mappings, both of which were great and huge fun but sadly both seemed a little unstable and with me having to do 5 hours sets at my club I can't feel I can use them (such as had a very tricky issue last week at the club with one of the mappings) - and I also didn't like loosing the loop counter with the DJTT mapping.

So have decided to try working in Midi mode with my S4 for jogwheel effects and hoping to build a similar mapping to ArmyOfMe's S2 mapping with the jogwheels. Obviously with midi mode you loose all the S4 functionality (so was planning to add back in some of the transport and filter functionality in the midi mapping). Not ideal, but thought I could switch between native and midi mode for some jogwheel fun mid track n switch back before mixing out to my next track.

Just wondering, has anyone remapped their S4 to go into midimode using 'SHIFT+SHIFT' like the S2 rather than 'Shift+Browser button'

As I think for a couple of reasons I'd much prefer to use those rather than the Shift+browser button combination ?

Also, are there any walk throughs for creating simple jogwheel S4 effects mappings? Ideally in native rather than midi, but if midi is the way to go I'd really appreciate any help/pointers as it really has to work as solid as possible in the club.

    Thanks for any help

that's not something you decide/map, it is how it is, that's hard linked to the hardware/firmware.

As for the solution you're looking for: there's none for jogwheel fxs on the the jog using the embedded mapping. All mappings provided can't achieve what you're looking for mostly because:
a/ they're wrong at their core base because the modifier system set up isn't well thought (when most of the time there was a solution to an extend), meaning there are way many pitfalls to disrupt the mapping...and we're talking about messing with the jogwheel , not something you want to do when mixing live right. Some people may live with those pitfalls, that's ok if that's fine for them, other don't realize they exist and will get a surprise one day or the other.
b/ because there's one thing you can't overcome: any button that has to be mapped that has a relation with the browse button (browse mode), has also to accommodate for the copy mode too. That would translate by creating two modifiers that cant' be used and coexist at the same time for the same control, one being a toggle modifier, the other one set as 'hold' type - doesn't make sense at all. (ie one finger, one action to disrupt any mapping).

So the best solution is to either create a full user mapping so you get rid of all pitfalls (but loose some functions and led feeback) or you create one in midi mode (and loose the responsiveness of the jogwheel - not a big deal if you don't scratch - and led displays - more annoying).

@Jane - Did you use my 5.0 mapping? I'd venture to say it is more stable than the versions before it. If you did try it, what issues have you had? I really need some feedback because, I haven't run into any real faults yet. Also, I'll be creating some documentation on how to map your own effect groupings with my mapping soon. I also have a couple of more surprises coming too.

You want the best FX jogs on the S4? Then try this mapping!

Thanks so very much Yul and Scamo for your replies to my post

That's great advice Yul about the limitations of trying to map the S4 (I never knew it was quite so hard coded!) and that's likely saved me all weekend trying and failing to get those midi map ideas to somehow work lol. I think I'll go for your advice and try and create a straightforwards midi map for some of the features I'm hoping to use, and switch back out of Midi when neading the full power of the S4.

I did have a read of your extensive thread about Midi mapping (and using the seperate NI control editor not the one in Tractors Prefereances to get started). So far have hit a blank but will have another go.

And Scamo, will also have ago with your new mapping this weekend. Looks like I was using one of your earlier ones (the 7 setting version). The issue I was having when was playing live during my 5 hour set was I'd not be able to recover and reset with SHIFT+Increment to reset the wheels, and had both my platters instantly re-loading the track whenever I pressed them. I just left them and got through the set, but was a little scary lol.

Sounds fabulous and will be sure to check it out and see if that also suits me more.

HUGE thanks to you both for all the various Tutorials, mappings and advice you've posted on hear (have been reading through an awful lot of it) - and hopefully I'll get something which works for me, is very solid and I can get on with trying to make my mixes more fun
