Dance music has become more of a commercial entity in its whole. Anybody here old enough to remember when people went to ibiza for some amazing music. Thats what made it such a sucsessful resort raising it above the likes of magaluf.

Now ibiza is just commerical music like the rest. Hip hop has stayed more true but I think that because the pioneers are still in the game to some extent.

Going off topic we are in an eara of unpresiendented choice wen it comes to things such as music put most ppl are too lazy and really couldnt care about musical identity and only listen to whats put infront of them

Its like politics most people dont know what there voting for or really care which is why we are in a situation where goverments have no real power its the companies that control them. If people actually cared we could change somthing.

commercialisation is alot more far reaching than music

I'm not a betting man, but I'd wager that the intense parts of the show that you guys were impressed with had nothing to do with Aoki and his DJing, and almost everything to do with stage design/lighting/computer programming/show promotion/side show antics coordinated by someone else.

Is that such a bad thing? I don't understand the hate, as long as people are leaving happy. Good for him.

I'm currently at crossroads regarding the opinion this article expresses. On one hand, if the crowd is having a good time, then who cares? I know I've had fun listening to Dj's jumping around to their music/show not caring a single bit about not being dancing. But on the other hand, it's true that now it seems like a big rock concert instead of dancing.

I'm gonna speak out of complete ignorance here since my trip withing EDM barely begun a few years ago. But I've always understood that House music was about "feeling the music" and "letting yourself be driven away by it", catching a certain groove and beat and what not (I could probably go and say the same thing about trance and psytrance from where I actually started liking EDM, albeit knowing practically naught about the genres). I do think that dancing should be what's elicited by the music, understanding that jumping around like an idiot can also be one of its consequences. But it's true, mainstream electro dj's/producers are now focused mainly on making people jump like it was the end of the world. And songs barely have "the groove" anymore. I personally LIKE it, but at the same time, I don't. I mean, I love letting myself go and jump and feel the energy, but I also love being carried away and enjoy the good ride some DJ's provide. I've had TONS of fun listening to Laidback Luke, Afrojack, Chuckie, Fedde le Grand, etc, but I think I've enjoyed much more those Dj's who made me embrace the music and just go with it. Guys like John Digweed come to mind. And I actually DANCED to his set instead of jumping.

So as a Dj I've been wondering. What do I really want? I do like the idea of having people jumping like hysterical monkeys to my drop, but at the same time, I don't like the idea of people expecting what MYSELF have to offer, instead of listening and embracing what the MUSIC has to offer by itself. Of course there is always an "in between" and that's what good DJ's can do. But I dunno... as I said, I'm at crossroads with the subject.

There is no hate. I just stated (as did the quoted article) he concentrates on sideshow gimmicks rather than keeping it all about the music. Why confuse stating facts as hate? For performance and stage presence, I enjoy guys like Carl Cox who can give a show by amazing me with skill and technique. When I want more of a performance with music, I'll go see Stomp or Blue Man Group. They do a much better job.

Jumping around like lunatics was never an issue. I've been part of the dance music scene for almost 2 decades. When I started, it didn't matter what you did on a dancefloor, and in my opinion, it still doesn't. That's not really the topic. We're more focused on the DJ, what he does, and the reasons why people are focusing on the DJ and/or their music.
