This cannot be stated enough. It's so important to be patient while you hone your skills and network to get gigs. In a world of instant gratification fewer and fewer people are willing to put the time and effort in in order to get what they want.

realistically, if your goal is to get booked, all you need to do is be the most social guy and kiss everybody's ass. Not just other industry people, but the actual randoms at events. Half the DJs I see get booked, get booked because they are friends with all the people at the event, so they'll show up for their set, and the DJ looks like they're killing it because they've got the crowd.
