Start with a second hand X-Session Pro.

It will take through the basics, and quite a way into some advanced FX stuff with a little mapping.

Once you have mastered that, you're ready for the VCI.

Actually, at this point, some of us are starting to find the VCI concept of a compact, all-in-one device a little limiting, and some people are looking into other directions and systems.

So, get to know your style before selecting your weapon of choice. The VCI is not the last word.

Another solution is to buy one of those cheap Korg Nano Kontrols, that would help get ya going

Yeah the nano kontrol is by far the most used controller in my arsenal. I take it to shows where i don't want to risk damaging my more expensive controllers. I take it to my friends basement studios when they ask me to help produce, so i can have some hands on control. And i'll lug it around town in my briefcase so i can work on my own tracks, or throw down a little mix over coffee. The best $60 i've ever spent.
