    Default On a budget...

    Hey DJTT

I have been wanting to get into mixing/producing for about two years now and i have finally decided do it after i finally got to try it out at a friend of a friends house .

My predicament is that i have no idea where to start with buying equipment or software. I have a pair of monitors already that my friend lent me until i get my own.

But in term of controllers and the rest of the gear i don't know where to start.

My budget atm is sadly $700. (all i have got atm :/)

The Kontrol S2 is completely useless for producing. Go for something that can do both like an APC 40.

start with one or the other. Do you already own a computer?

Djing =/= producing. If you want to make music you'll need a keyboard at the very least. Given your budget, I would say to choose one and run with it before diving into the other.

    Default producing software

I'm a huge fan of Propellerhead Reason (music production software http://www.propellerheads.se/products/reason/). I have a few minor complaints from having used it for years, but its an affordable music production package. All the instruments are built in, so you don't have to run around buying VSTis, and the midi/usb keyboard support is quite good - I've noticed that its much more pleasent to play through than a lot of VST based music production software. I won't go into it's downsides (except that at least as of v4 the drum samples weren't that good), because it would possibly discourage you from going out any buying it.
