I'm pretty sure Dubstep is exploding right now (or at least in BC).

i thought it was New Wave? Guess im lost in the 80s
depends what you like! not whats in fashion. do not conform!!
i apologise for my ranting
dubstep and nu-disco are probably the hottest current genres of edm... electrohouse and fidget are starting to wear out their welcome, but I still enjoy them. The dirty synth bassline centric music is on it's way out, you can hear a lot of electrohouse producers are scrapping the farting lfo synths and going for more acoustic sounds/smooth synths with progressive melodies.
I'm noticing that breaks and bigbeat are starting to make a comeback slowly but surely. You can hear it in many house and dubstep tunes lately, it will drop into a break and it's always the hottest part of the track. My prediction is that 2010-2011 is gonna be a big year(s) for the resurgence of breakbeat's popularity, I expect some new breaks sub-genres to come of it that will bump disco and dubstep off the throne.
But like others said don't base your musical preferences on what's trendy, play what you are naturally attracted to- it's the only way to develop a unique style of your own.

I'd say that most current is a type of tribal-tech-house/house, which is in the majority of charts 2day (with 4/4 music ofc)
You shouldn't have to ask what music to produce. You should already know what you want to produce. You're supposed to develop a style through practice - not decide you want to DJ/produce the most current music.
Keep your eyes open - the band wagon will be along any minute.
