House parties are an odd beast. Generally groups of friends like the same music, so just find out what everyone likes before hand if you want an advantage. The best house parties are the ones where nothing is planned, so this whole "slow music and oldies" thing may be your friends idea of a hilarious slow dance game, but when you get a house full of people tanked up, there's no way you'll get them to do something like that.

In my experience, anyways. But maybe British house parties are different to American?

You can always ask for a list of favorites and must plays from whoever's throwing the party. even a short list can point you in the right direction.

Children, oldies are not classic 90s songs. Oldies are from the 50s-70s. From what I unfortunately have come to realize, 90s count as retro.

I will not accept what i grew up listening to as oldies just yet

You don't care because you were born in the 90s or 2000. I care because I grew up in the 90s and it's not oldies hahaha but yes, I think OP gets the picture.

There was some great music in the 90s though... that was 20 years ago... so almost in classic status
