what are some ways to change the sound of the bass

change pitch, play with different notes or change the transport of the osc in your vst's

a multiband compressor should do the trick.
Maybe try duplicating the track, and putting a hipass on one, and a lopass on the other, then use some distorter/enhancer/sausagefattener on the bass (preferably midbass, since distorting subbass won't bring any good sounds out).
