When I create an ad-hoc network to connect my iPad to my macbook to use lemur I lose internet connection on my macbook itself is there any way I can have the ad-hoc network going so my iPad can communicate with my macbook and connect to the internet as well?

You can only use your wireless card for the ad-hoc network or to connect to the internet. The only way to fix this is to use a wired network or have another usb wireless adapter plugged in.
