1. Building software (particularly sophisticated software like a soft-synth) requires a lot of time and skill. If you've never written code, it's way way way more work than you can even imagine.

2. The cost of making of said software is very expensive, hence, it's a commercial product and not free.

Using pirated copies is theft. Plain and simple.

Find some open source or free synth to play with, or pony up the $200. It's not much to ask.

Not defending him exactly here because he's definitely an asshat, BUT there's no guarantee that HE's the one who pirated it. It could've been Linkin Park, or the recording studio, or any one of the many sound guys who ACTUALLY make the music. I highly doubt if this guy even knows how a DAW works, let alone how to download and install VSTs, pirated or not.

After watching this, I'd have to say this is the most likely scenario.

Deadmau5 uses or used a pirated copy of Sylenth1 as well.

He said it on twitter a few weeks ago.

The company that makes Sylenth1 should give this guys a free copy imo. They produce great music using it, show them many times on social networks, interviews, whatever and are great publicity for the company. Why not?

deadmau5 wasn't talking about himself in that tweet. He was referring to Avicii who ALSO uses a cracked version of Sylenth as shown in his In The Studio feature video:
