Default How did you choose a genre to mix?

Hello all, I thought I would open a question thread as I'm very interested to hear other's opinions on the topic:

When you first started mixing/djing, how did you decide on the genre you wanted to mix primarily? Did you ever have a few different styles that you wanted to specialise in, but felt you were forced to go down one direction, rather than pursue both?

My example is that I love the techno style of DJs such as Loco Dice, but I also love bouncier, bass driven house/techno (like that of the Dirtybird crew). I'm just not sure I'll be able to combine the two into my sets and will probably have to look deeper and decide on one if I want to get shows hosted by certain labels etc. I love all electronic music, from dubstep and Drum and Bass to garage and house, but my interests lay mainly in house and techno!

I would love to hear your opinions!

It can all be mixed. I just recorded a 4 hour set over the weekend that has Classic house, Funky, Tech House & Techno. Don't limit yourself to a "genre" Good music is good music and should be shared.

I may eventually put it up on my Mixcloud. I recorded it using Traktor and because of recording limitations it exists as a 3 hour and a 1.25 hour recording that need to be merged. I'll let you know whenever I post it up.

When Joey Beltram released 'Energy Flash' loads of House Dj's played it. I liked it then because you didn't get this same genre all night stuff. You would get some house, garage, maybe the odd rare groove track, and some techno. It was great, It's such a pity how a genre has to be created for ech change in hi-hat pattern, or bass line

I loved house music for a long time, took me a while before I saw a DJ at work and I told myself that I needed to do this!

It also seems that you're way too worried about your "maybe future dj life" right now before you're actually a few hundred hours deep into some actual practice. Having fun should be your #1 priority... Get the gear, and work on the type of show you'd actually like to create.. If you have no act, then there's nobody that's going to pay any attention to you anyways.

Very very true! I do like that the genres are somewhat guidelines however, in that house, techno and everything in between are all very mixable, along with styles such as dnb, dubstep and trap

I didn't choose techno as my genre, it chose me. Awakenings came on my path, and it was love from both sides from the beginning. It was this special night...

In retrospect, it's surprising I took up DJing 2 whole years after.

blunt, but probably very true, I'm a dreamer and an optimist, I try and envisage myself where I want to be in the future, it gives me something to aim for - plus I love music, so I'd say it's not the worst thing in the world to aim high!

I know that's not your point anyway, and I know I have low mileage as a DJ, but I was posting this as a general question, not one aimed to help me!
