Got a question on external sound cards. Is it possible to have an external CD player hooked up through the sound card and use this incase your lappy crashes? I guess it would have to have it's own power and also some line level to mix in an external CD player?

If your laptop crashes, your usb soundcard too. You have to connect cd player to external mixer.

Maybe exists a soundcard that works as inputs/outputs hub as standalone. Perhaps mixers with built in audio interface.

    No, Not A Mixer,
The Traktor Skratch Multicore Cables Just Let You Connect An Audio8 Channel & Turntable/CD/MP3 Player To The Same Mixer Channel, Allowing You To Choose Your Source.
This Allows You To Mix Sets With Traktor/Vinyl/CD.
Also If Your Laptop Crashes, You Can Just Play An 'OldSkool' Vinyl/CD Set.

A lot of soundcards allow direct monitoring without the computer, but the ways they do it and their use as DJ cards varies widely. Lexicon Omega & Focusrite Saffire are great interfaces that do this, but I wouldn't use them as DJ cards (for the headphone cue assignment difficulties listed above). I would imagine the higher-end Emus do, and I think the M-Audio FireWire 410 does, though I've never used mine this way. I believe the TC Electronic Konnekt 24D & Konnekt Live do as well.

ok thanks guys gonna look more into this, i just dont want to pick up a mixer for cd backup if the soundcard can do the job. i really starting to think ill just wait it out another month or two for the vci-300 so far it looks like it has all i really need.

edit: ok the konnekt live looks very intresting, this can do with the vci-100, hummmm

I think the Konnekt Live is about the best you can do before getting up into the stratosphere of Hammerfall $$$ territory, but it's still about $700 U.S., and it's pretty heavy. From the reviews it's a great interface, though.
