FYI: [this is the edited version of what i wrote while i had food poisoning] I recently met most likely the most talented and dedicated producer I know who wants to get into DJing. As it turns out I want to become a producer as well as DJ. So we teamed up to do both together. Him and I will release some new tracks soon. After that we will go live. Our dilemma is our set up and dynamic: we are relatively new so we need help on what equipment to get and how to use it and incorporate it. One of my ideas is to use traktor scratch pro 2 with a traktor audio 10 and mix 4 decks: 2 track decks and 2 sample decks each sample deck having 4 mini sample decks… From a producers stand point he could make songs on the fly with the sample decks and I manage the main decks and effects processors. We would really appreciate anyones input on the subject…
dont want to be a pain, but formatting your post a little will result in more people reading it - and more importantly, more people answering constructively.
Hey guys…
Excuse me for the bad post and spelling I had food poising last night and needed to distract myself. I am much better and now and can actually write. My question is are there any sugestions for a 2 person DJ group… Dynamics, gear..etc,
Honestly it’s just a matter of figuring out a workflow that works for the both of you. Spending a lot of time practicing together, figuring out how you’d want to mix your own production stuff into other tracks and the like.
Really, just hang out and fuck around with music for ours until you get a flow. It’s what I’ve been doing with a couple buddies lately, and it’s a lot of fun.
I get what u mean but right now we can’t fuck around cause we don have that much equipment. We have a Kontrol X1 Numark X6 Audio $ and Traktor Scratch Pro..(I’m dying to get a MFP) This is more like a one man DJ setup. So I guess a better way to get the answers I want is if i sell all my equipment except the x1 and use my save up money I will have about 1000. what 2 man dj setup can i have with that money?
u can do a 2 man setup with anything you could both have an x1 each and a 4 channel mixer and both do 2 decks each or one controls the mixing and the other effects
but if you really wanna go down the group and due route i would use ableton
opens up alot more doors and if your using your own tracks even better
if you have an idea you can probs do it in ableton
you have to learn gear first to “perform” with it. Ableton with an apc 40 is very flexable, sync with tracktor or serato and whatever dj controlers u wanna use.
allen and heath stuff is awesome tooo
my friend and I are going to start doing a Traktor/Ableton sync. He uses a midi-keyboard right now but is going to be buying an APC-40 so I’m going to have the master midi-clock in Traktor scratch and he’ll probably load clips and scenes through ableton and we’ll just play off each other, doing on the fly mashups and what not.
If you don’t already have software, maybe Serato and ableton using the bridge might be an easier set-up.
Just use Ableton period, no need for Traktor by the sounds of it. Figure out how many channels you’ll be needing, and then get the needed amount controllers to accommodate. The cheapest and more flexible set up to start with would be a UC33e + Launchpad per eight channels.
There is really no need to run Traktor from what I was reading, you can use channels 1 and 2 for “mixing”, and route those to channels 1 and 2 on the mixer, and then he can use as many channels as he’d like on Ableton running through 2 and 3.
K.I.S.S. No need to worry about syncing up laptops and on so with this set up.
Well…here’s the thing. Ableton was designed for that. Traktor wasn’t.
If I was doing a live thing based on stems…I’d figure out a workflow that let me wind up with consistent stems. I’d probably base it on Tarekith’s description of his Live-based live show with some changes. I’d also just slap an APC20 onto an APC40 ala those guys that posted that tutorial on DJTT about how to do it…and use that for the basis for, well, everything.
If I was working with another person…I’d want one of us to be doing something live: playing synths, playing real instruments, rapping/singing…whatever. Seeing 2 people punch at buttons when I know Live even as haphazardly as I do always seems a bit weird to me. There usually just isn’t that much going on. You add instruments and it gets really fun to watch if you guys don’t suck.
But that also requires playing an instrument.
But there’s nothing wrong with just doing a DJ set with mostly original material. Nothing at all. It’s just a different animal.
APC 40 for each one of you? maybe add a apc20, to make an “apc80” (or add a MFP or whatever suits your needs)
I got a apc 40 and 20 myself, and with the mapping I made (so far) I think it beats the s4 (for me)
APC’s will give you loads of buttons, alot of faders and alot of knobs. If you take the time to learn midi mapping, you can get amazing results.
little note to add, take note that your body takes up space.
You can’t mix comfortably if you have to work in the same space.
(so combining APC’s into 1 unit would be a bad idea)
We had a jam session yesterday he already has Abelton live 7 and have TSP2.
We ran his laptop through through a live deck in traktor so I could use traktor for its effects and ease of use and he made some beats on the fly. It was awesome because we switched back and forth. The combination really worked well.
Thanks Guys we are planning on getting a machine for abelton.
