A claim that DJ equipment in clubs will be replaced by iPhones and Tablets - wtf?
I saw a post on Reddit where this guy is claiming that in a few years all clubs will start ditching their CDJ’s and using iPads/iPhones/Tablets instead. I understand that there are apps for tablets that you can mix tracks with and so fourth however I do not believe for a second that all clubs are going to clear out the gear in their DJ booth for a USB port. I tried to explain to him that Apple does not make professional grade audio equipment. He said that the audience doesn’t know the difference and that there is no need to use real professional audio gear. I told him that I would find it very difficult to believe that in just a few years large clubs like Privilege would get rid of their equipment for a tablet. Is this some kind of growing trend that bares any truth? Just wanted to know what people here on DJ Tech Tools thought of that claim.
The reset was comments and replies made under the topic where he was suggesting that the iPhone/Tablets will be used in clubs in the next few years. The guy in the video (on the page that link goes to) is standing there swiping around on his iPhone changing tracks or mixing them apparently on the phone itself. It just looks so odd.

It probably will in the future. The younger generation doesn’t have the same standards that we do. I’ve tried on my ipad and don’t like the control. I’ll stick with hardware.
Do you remember the PoS belt drive turntables and crappy Radio Shack mixers we used to have? It’s not about standards. It’s about what you’re comfortable with, pure and simple.
Of course. That was entry level stuff. Like starting off in your bedroom before you could own 1200’s and a better mixer. Looking back I don’t think I would’ve been on the main stage with that equipment. Like I said I my first post, I do believe they will be using this in the future on the main stage. Me, I’ll stick with the knobs and crossfaders. Lol
The OP form Reddit - yes he says it absolutely WILL replace CDJ’s/Clubgear etc.
And furthermore he suggests that when this happens - any DJ that does not use a tablet to DJ with will be ‘pushed aside’ for someone that does and they will loose work.
All of our devices are consistently being consolidated into singular pieces of technology, so I can see his logic.
Think about 15 years ago. You had a portable music player, cell phone, house phone, fax machine, photo camera, video camera, phone book, and address book. Now, you just have a cell phone.
The DJ peering at his phone is not really much different to the DJ peering at his laptop, and neither are much different from the crowd, most of whom are watching the whole thing on their phone while they record it anyway.
Looks are everything…When I dress for work people are always calling me sir. When I’m dressed down for stuff around my house and need to go to the store, people don’t even look twice at me. The way you present yourself in public is a big deal. I’m not saying it’s right, it’s just the way humans are.
Your music is your presentation. Most DJs I have seen (big name or not) are usually just in a T-shirt (except Eric Morillo). If you use an iphone, so be it. You better rock the party.
I agree music is the presentation but you need to look the part. T-shirst aren’t bad. If you look like a bum your not going to get hired. If you have already become a huge name, you can do what ever you want. New djs will probably adopt the iPhone/ipad dj thing. I don’t think I will.
If you are trying to “get” the job. Of course. Take a shower and put on a nice shirt. But I am standing and moving for three or four hours I need to be comfortable.
