With new controllers getting larger such as the S4 and others, and DJ booths still remaining crammed from CDJ’s/Turntables/mixers etc. I think it’s time for a company to make a useable controller stand to fit right over the top of some CDJ’s or some technics. I picture something with foldable legs and rubber soles. With the right height so that it will not damage other equipment. And you should be able to bang away on it with ease and no shaking. To me using something in the shape of a laptop stand is not structurally efficient enough. I figured DJ Techtools would be the first guys to make a product like this… I have encountered this problem numerous times, and I have even been turned down gigs over other DJ’s who use CDJ’s just because of booth space. Enough is enough! But what do you think, do you think its a good product idea?
Your not alone on this one, I’m sure many of us have been thinking the same for a while. A stand with adjustable width settings would be ideal, that way you wouldn’t get caught out when you come across different size kit to raise your controller above, It would have to have a max size setting to fit over a 19inch rack mounted mixer. I’m sure something like this will be out in the not so distant future.
I think some campanies are reluctant becuase they are afraid some of the DJ community will be pissed off. Like how the old school DJ’s who frown on controllerists will find it disrepectful to throw your " toyish gear" on top of my O’ so precious CDJ’s or turntables.
But I think if properly made and advertised, for not just controllerists it can be percieved well by most. For example something like that can be used for a laptop or even to raise CDJ’s or a mixer up to a higher level therfore being less crouched while DJ’ing in certain situations.
I know it’s not the solution that everybody wants, but I was thinking of making covers for CDJs and TTs out of pieces of Acrylic. They would just sit over the top of the other gear and act as a stand.
One of the best things you can do, from a controllerists pov, is to get a flight case for your controller. In the top part, fill it with a square piece of foam, the kind with the little foam points.
Aside from protecting your gear, next time your playing a gig and the booth is full of turntables, pull it out and sit it on top of a TT, plug in and off you go. No harm done and youve got a stable platform from which to work.
I did this exact thing last time I had a gig. But I also used a laptop stand and managed to hook it under a TT and sat my lappy on it.
I use foam sometimes.. works for turntables but not so much CDJ’s but a legit solution would be nice. Something that all controllerists could use night in and out.
There does need to be a sort of universal controller stand or at least a range to fit various sizes.
Companies who are reluctant to build a controller stand for fear of bunching the panties of CDJ/TT users deserve to lose business. My guess for the dearth of stands is the broad range of requirements, weight and usage for companies to effectively advertise a true “universal” piece of hardware.
does anyone bring one of those plastic tt decksavers just in case there isnt any room when they play at clubs? ive always thought this would be a good solution… was actually considering grabbing one for a tt and one for a cdj1000, since those seem to be the most popular club installations, and just have them on deck just in case they are needed. only problem with this is im not too sure how much weight they can support. but the new covers from decksaver seem pretty legit… could probably hold a controller or two

I though the whole idea with controllers was to lighten the load on dj’s, so we only need to bring a lappy and controller. Not large bits of cumbersome plastic, just in case.
The current stuff on the market, e.g. the stanton uberstand, is geared towards the mobile DJ. As such, it needs to be lightweight and portable. These specs alone dictate that the stand will be somewhat flimsy/bouncy.
Then youve got the other end of the spectrum. I got a rock solid budget stand the other day, no wobble, adjustable width, etc, but it isnt the most portable.
The trouble is, its nigh impossible to cover both those requirements and still make the stand affordable/competetive.
Then theres the problem of making it universal enough to fit anything in a dj booth. If a controllerist turns up to a club, his hardware could be any size/shape. What youre proposing is a logistical nightmare for any company.
I dont really think so. Well more often than not when I show up at a club there is always CDJ’s. If you make the legs foldable and the height adjustable, with specs matching up with CDJ’s then you should be able to make one. Im sure there is alot harder things to engineer out there…
Anyone who uses their gear in a flight case is really not thinking about the next DJ to perform anywas. And maybe a second type stand to fit over technics, or you could just adjust the stand to fit over it.
All in all if your digital setup is that extensive even just one of these type stands could save room. All your gear doesn’t need to fit on it. All in all if there were lots of stands like this on the market I believe Many controllerists will be able to get much more gigs…
