After reading loads of stuff and the many posts on here I’m still unsure weather to make the jump. sorry for another mac post btw.
My best friend who’s a graphic designer Has purchased a new macbook pro and I have first dibs on his old well cared for one. The specs are
Late 2006 macbook pro model
17" screen
3 gig of ram
core 2 duo processor
My main concern, is this to old to make it worth buying? Any other issues I should look out for? Can they be serviced at all?
My current laptop Toshiba has pretty much the same specs but is only 10 months old. I’m only really just going for the Mac stability and to get away from the ground loop problem mine has, after trying several things to fix it.
if the price is right, make the jump no doubt! i will never go back to windows! might want to try to keep both if thats possible, sometimes compatibility is a small problem. not with audio and what not, but your software/game selection is somewhat smaller and more costly
I am running Live with Decadance and Digital Performer Komplete 5 and tons of other high cpu stuff on a 2007 2.1 core 2 duo with 4 gigs. that machine should be perfect for what you need. it will be viable for another 3-4 years potentially.
My mac dual boots into Window XP using Bootcamp which comes with all Macs that have an intel chip I believe. You have to have a full copy of Windows, but it is possible and pretty easy to set up.
It’s got snow leopard 10.5 on it. I will try and haggle a bit which i have not done although they are still pricer on ebay , after all i gave a 12string guitar which is his pride and joy besides his new macbook pro lol, mates rates hey
Thanks guy’s for the peace of mind, was unsure of a laptop that old.
It’s a good buy, you can put 6GB of ram in it for around £100 as well. I have had my Macbook Pro for nearly 4 years and it still runs as well as the day I got it. In fact I’m reluctant to get a new one although the body of mine has seen better days.
10.5 is Leapord, 10.6 is Snow Leapord, and 10.7 is Lion and was announced today. There were some decent changes from 10.5 to 10.6, but nothing real major. You can buy a 10.6 upgrade disc for $29 from Apple though so it’s cheap enough to go ahead and do it.
all my music and pictures I save on my external hard drive from windows 7, will they be able to transfer easily to Mac OS or is there a trick and possibly a headache coming up?
Those macs max(macs) out at 4gb ram. can’t do six. RAM is faster in matched pairs, consider going to 4gb, wipe hard drive, give it a clean. Snow leopard, maybe a new battery, and it’ll be friggen awesome
