Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction here. I currently run a fairly cheap/basic sound set up for my live performances. It consists of 4, 12" main passive speakers that run off a phonic powered mixer that gives out something like 200W. It provides decent sound at house parties, and I sometimes rig up a logitech computer speaker sub (i know poor..) to the mix for some low end as well. Thing is I would like to add a better more powerful self powered sub into the mix since I am able to play at one bar, but I need to bring my own sound gear. Is there any subs in the 200-300 dollar range people can recommend? Or perhaps websites that are good for live sound gear? Thank you
The bass cannon is not far from the recommendation I will make…and that is to DIY some horn loaded subs. There is little to recommend from the commercial offerings in your price range.
The general rule of thumb is for the subs to be 2x the physical size of the tops (and that is for Top 40…for EDM the recommendation is 4x the size).
Checkout the Titan 39 on this DIY site. If you are DIY capable, you will not be disappointed by any of the designs here.
For reference, I have built ten DR200’s and ten Titan 39’s. The system is sized for a 25,000 sqft ballroom. I have also built one Titan 48 for a friend.
This! Wow dude, you are a godsend. I have been looking for the right DIY plans to get, cause I cant afford the quality of bass cabinet that I absolutely must have for the rental company I’m building from scratch. I am a very snobist audiophile, lol.
That website just gave me all the motivation I need to build my own.
I have already ordered plans for the Tuba 30, and Tuba 60. Build cost for a single 10" loaded Tuba 30 with an eminence driver is around $150!
I will definitely go larger… I’m thinking 4+ dual 12" Tuba 30’s + 2 of the smaller single 15" Tuba 60’s for extended low-range extension.
I already have two dual 15" full range concert style cabinets that I got through a friend on a deal too good to pass up, and now I finally have the low-range sorted.
Welcome to the DIY side. Once you start down the DIY path, forever will it dominate your destiny.
For rental, it is appropriate to have different designs. Just keep in mind, that it is not recommended to mix different speaker types that are producing the same frequency ranges.
You will want to dump these onto some other unsuspecting noob in short order and build some tops to go with your new subs.
For rental, the Jack series would be my first choice. These can run full range for smaller gigs without subs. If you want a full production rig, then look at the DR250/280.
Thanks again good sir, and I shall probably “dumping those towers” on some noobs as soon as I finish the sub bins… maybe sell a couple If I really have a taking to it to fund the project
