Advice for a DJ wanting to become a producer

I have a friend who has been DJing for about a year or so. I have even hired him for events that I have arranged. He asked me for my advice on how he can become more of a Music Producer than a DJ.

I got into music production about 20 years ago and love that. I am NOT a DJ and have no intentions of becoming a DJ. DJing is a great skill that can years and years to master and do well. I have great respect for DJs and what they do. I am more of a back room studio person. I prefer spending hours in the studio working on tracks rather than performing as a DJ to an audience. A DJ is a performer. I am not a performer.

I suggested to my friend that he take a short music production course to learn the basics. I am sure he already has a good understanding from DJing. He said that he did not want to spend money on an expensive course!

So I suggested doing an online course. He said that he did not like online courses and anyway, he wanted to meet some people who could reach or mentor him.

I offered t lend him a book on basic music production to get started and he said that he does not like reading books!!

He is learning to play “Piano” (Keyboard really not a real piano) and teaching him self. When I got into music production I forced myself to learn piano, taking lessons, doing the Grade exams, learning to read music and learning about music theory. I suggested this to him but he says that he does not want to learn to read sheet music because that is just BS!!!

I am at a loss as to what to suggest. It seems that he wants the rewards of being a Music Producer but does not want to do the work that he does not like to do.

Any suggestions?
