So I feel I’ve hit a wall creatively.

I’ve been gigging for quite a while and I’m hearing a lot of exciting things DJs are doing but I’m not doing and it’s quite frustrating. What’s most frustrating is I have a great ear for music, I’m technically savvy, I like to think I’m a pretty good DJ, and I get regular gigs, yet the things people are doing are boggling my mind.

I’ve upgraded to the S4 and bought the Traktor Bible and my horizons are much brighter and vast, but I’m painfully coming to the realization I’m only scratching the surface with this thing.

I think I need something to point me in the right direction. I know of schools and stuff, but I’m really looking for a more cheaper, effective route.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m good at what I do, but I want to gain some more tools and stuff, technically speaking.

Do you have any ideas? Much appreciated.

YouTube.

what are you talking about?

like using it to it’s full potential?

what style of music do you play?

Pioneerdjsounds videos (overhead camera radio show) on youtube and tons of practice/messing around.

You don’t have to ‘boggle people’s minds’, you’ve just got to play good music. Maybe think about moving into production?

I play everything from Hip Hop to Dance Pop.

I’m more interested in using the S4 more dynamically if that makes sense. Similar to Flipside http://www.djflipside.com/

Can you be more specific

You’re saying overhead video will make me better?

Blowing minds is not what I want to do, I was saying my mind is blown when I hear what some of these guys are doing.

How would production help me be a better DJ?

He’s saying that watching someone else use gear in a way you haven’t thought of is a good way to learn new tricks.

Yup.

Ok, I’ve checked out those vids but they are all using cdjs which I can appreciate, but since I’ve never used them, doesn’t really help me much in terms of how the mixing, cueing occurs… I am searching around though…

I also use the S4 and have learned plenty from those videos, the latest Laidback Luke one has some cool tricks that can be done on the S4.
