Any thoughts on the Numark Mixdeck?

Hey,

I know I am a bit late, but I thought I would add my two cents about the MixDeck (if it can be any help).

The Problems
Thought I would list this first since they aren’t that many and they all getting resolved. The crossfader is a little “wonky;” the sound volume dips (noticeably) whe the xfader is at the middle position. This isn’t a problem on ALL unites, just most (from the forums I read). Numark will fix it for free (including shipping) and get back to you in a week. Haven’t sent it in yet, have too many gigs lined up… but will soon.

MixDeck and Serato
Works GREAT! I use Traktor 99% of the time; only use Serato when I have to Vj (use Video-SL). Its great except you can’t control video when relative CD mode for Serato; when in CD mode all the MiDi buttons on the decks don’t send out midi commands. There are two work arounds:

  1. Use Internal mode and change MixDeck to MiDi setting. Can’t scratch though because no timecode used… not a problem if you aren’t a turntables, little annoying though to scrub through tracks.

  2. Buy a small midi controller (like the Kontrol X-1 or the Denon DCH-100) use the top controls of X-1 to control the Serato audio FX/Loops & the bottom to control the Video FXs and Video crossfader (which is only controllable via midi). Might sound annoying to work with two crossfaders but actually makes some pretty unique performances (where the audio of one track is playing with video of another).

MixDeck and Traktor
Great. The default TSI is a little not-thought-out in certain areas. But I re-mapped some of the buttons and added some functionality, just working off the built in MixDeck template and did so in less than an hour. If you want I can post the TSI.

Overall
Keyword: UNIVESAL!!! This is a great “first buy for people” because if you don’t like traktor you can buy a Serato and use it or if you want to move to video, its possible. You can’t find another system that allows for type of “growth.” (w/o reinvesting a bunch of money)

And if you every plan on doing any mobile gigs (weddings, etc), this is a great buy… you want know how many times I get a guy asking me to play a CD he got from his car (usually ethnic music, lol). And its a great reassurance to you clients to know that you have a back system, if the computer crashes.

Yeah!

Thats pretty badass!

Only thing is…whats the build like?

Its got a FUCKLOAD of features tho…for 500 ey?

in the above video, did anybody think that when DJ dario introduced himself, his arms looked really short?

kinda like a t-rex… sorry for the ot

TSI plz

Can you share your TSI file for the mixdeck please? I’m curious about how u modified the default one! And I’ll give it a shot when ill received mine! 2 days remaining UPS says!

connecting 2 external turntables to the Mixdeck

Do you think it would be possible to controll Serato’s (or even VDJ) functions as MIDI but still be able to scratch if you connect the unit with 2 external turntables and use them as timecoded to scratch?

Also I was wondering when controlling Mixdeck with Serato, do you need another external audio-asio-interface? or are you using the internal sound card of the Mixdeck?

My Numark Mixdeck Review

Since Musician’s Friend deleted my review of the Numark Mixdeck, I’ll have to share my experience elsewhere. Truth is, I feel the need to share this everywhere I can so people have an accurate idea of what kind of built quality and support they can expect.

In the first 30 days of use, the Numark Mixdeck froze up on me twice in LIVE situations. I’m a working DJ. I do weddings, and in the off-season, fill in at local bars & clubs. This is unacceptable. The unit was released at over $1000 retail, has balanced outs, and spec-wise is a professional piece of gear. Unfortunately, the implementation is not up to par. Aside from the “freezes”, some buttons are buggy and non-responsive at times, for instance the scratch button, even on the new replacement unit I got… Just like the last unit, sometimes you have to push it multiple times for it to engage. Also, sometimes when you disengage it, it’s still on, even though the light is off. So you touch your platter to speed up the tempo and woops, scratch is still engaged.

Thankfully Musician’s Friend’s great 45 day guarantee saved the day, or I’d be shipping it to Numark for 6 weeks like another reviewer. I emailed support regarding this, and another issue, and never heard back at all. The worst support (or lack thereof) I’ve ever received. That’s how you treat people who give you money for your undependable buggy equipment? Ignore them? Sorry, but there are way too many choices out there, and from companies who value their customers, and wish to continue in business.
If the Mixdeck was dependable, I’d give it 5 stars all day. It’s a great concept, the functionality is great, it looks great, nicely mapped for Traktor etc. That’s all worthless though, when you have a packed dance-floor during someone’s wedding reception and not one button on the Mixdeck will respond, or worse, your music stutters and goes off completely. There is no “backup” way of using the CD decks on the Mixdeck when it freezes… When it freezes, it ALLLL freezes. >:disappointed:

Some would argue that Numark’s NS7 is their flagship, and therefore their “professional” DJ system. The fact is, it’s not for the same market at all. I rarely need to scratch, I don’t need spinning platters, and I’d point out that Numark quietly recalled many NS7s because of issues. My advice would be to steer clear of anything from Numark at all. Every polite and professional email I sent them was ignored completely. That’s your HUGE red flag. Buyer beware.

please dont buy the mixdeck, all its done is ruined any usable setup. i mean the crossfader seems heavy and doesnt slide well. lots of my knobs are loose (after a few months and being well taken care of). i thought the internal soundcard was cool but i have come to hate internal sound cards since you really cant add or upgrade unless you buy another external. it wont read my iphone (3G) so thats a bust. the build quality doesnt seem very good and im always afraid of breaking something. not to mention the button are uber hard and the loops and cues are way to close together, which is whyi had to buy the X1. the only good thing to me would be how cool it looks when lit up.

EDIT: this may only happen to me but you cannot start the mixdeck while having traktor on or it will freeze up. ive uninstalled and reinstalled and everything i can think of. all the mixdeck seems to be is a hassle

NuMuark MixDeck

what’s up i recently purchased a mixdeck and i don’t have any major issues at all. i have the silver mixer so it is the later edition where all the previous editions bugs were worked out. i am just getting into DJing but have been a producer for 10 years so i know a little about the basics. i purchased it for its versatility and that it definitely is. you can run flash drives, external hard drives, cds, a turntable,an ipod or your laptop. one issues i had was when i got it from guitar center they sold it to me as a new unit but it actually was previously opened and alot of shit was missing. the software was already registered under some one else also. this is no fault of numark but guitar center is known for selling returned items as new so just make sure your box isn’t opened. they got me a new sealed mixdeck out of the back no problem so that got taken care of. the other issue was the actual software. my version came with Tracktor LE. i know that’s what a lot of djs use but i didn’t like the presentation of it. i know its a bad ass program and i love the amount of effects it has and the freedom to map everything how you like but i just don’t like looking at it. so i switched up and got virtual dj pro 7. this i did not pay for at all since a cracked version was free online. sweet. since i got that it’s been all good. plus you can change and create your own skins and get a butt ton of fx for it. one issue when recording to the laptop is that the channels for some reason are not separated. maybe it’s my own fault or something but it just aint happening. i can record externally without any issues at all and to the ipod so that issue is not a major one. also if you think you are going to scratch with this thing off of your laptop and NOT have it hooked up to another apparatus then your wrong. to truly scratch without all the latency issues then you will need to but Serato or Tracktor scratch. you can scratch off the cds and flash drives no problem. i myself dj hip hop but don’t care too much for scratching. i like blending and looping like an electronica/dance dj so this doesn’t bother me at all. this thing is sturdy. it looks professional. and it does look cool when it is lit up. i would recommend the flight case though because you are not going to want to scratch this beast up. hopefully this will help anyone looking to buy one when making a choice on what to get. i like it. it is the bees knees.

Also, this thread was collecting dust for 6 months. Bump? :U!

Having owned one of these for a while

DONT FUCKING BUY IT.

i cant stress enough the annoyance of the Mixdeck.

Cons: Its the size of a boat.
the mixer has no midi.
the buttons are extremely cheap.
the jog wheels resolution is low.
the knobs get broken easily.
LCD Screens break.

Pros: uhmmm… it plays cdjs?

Mine featured all of the cons i mentioned, and i sent it to Numark for warranty repair.

theyve had it for 3.5 fucking months. numark sucks.

i had to send an angry email to the head of warranty at numarks world HQ to get anything done. and they handle you like shit. they dont tell you anything about the progress of the repair or anything.

EDIT: i know this is late but hopefully it can help anyone that reads this.

Thanks, DJKT!

DJKT I really appreciate you sharing this information. I have been on the fence for a couple of weeks regarding this purchase, and your review confirmed my suspicions.

Thanks for helping out your fellow djs.

Bassline Brine,
I don’t know which Numark you know, but the Numark I know makes great products. Mixtrack, Mixtrack Pro, Mixdeck Quad, Express & Normal, Numark V7, Numark NS6, Numark N4, Numark NS7, please, all amazing. Apart from their AMAAAZING prices, they have great products

so i guess you own every single one of those Numark products and can say you used them all many times and not had a single issue?

Each person on here said they bought the Mixdeck and had issues. I guess everyone on here is crazy.
