Anyone have audio working with USB3?

Anyone have audio working with USB3?

I upgraded my lappy this year and like most people went for the very latest build :stuck_out_tongue:. I was pleased to see my new laptop has 2 x USB3 , i thought that would be great as I suspect that the next generation of audio devices will be USB3 and for now the ports will fallback (as designed) to USB2 when an apropriate device is connected.

I was wrong!:rage:

The problem I face, is that none of my audio gear, Denon, NI, Yamaha, CME, Korg works, the device is seen and installed, but will not work in real time or work at all (any audio stream).

The chip used by many manufactures is the old NEC chip, now owned and branded Renesas. http://www2.renesas.com/usb/en/about_usb/USB3_3.html

All the reports of poor perfomance and dropouts seem to have been addressed now, mainly focusing around external Hard disc, mice, printers etc.

I have rasied the point many times, but Dell / Renesas say that it’s such as small amount of calls that they don’t see it as a problem.

So my question again, has anyone got a working example of USB3 and MIDI / Audio.

If you have, i would like to know what combination you have .. e.g.

Mac Book Pro '11 - NiKontrol S4 - NEC chipset FW xx.xxx Driver version xxx
Acer thing - audio device 1 - joebloggs chipset - FW 12.9 - Driver 3.4 WinXP

or if you want you can share your experiences with USB3 and if you had problems .

thanks for reading

ASUS Intel1.5 NEC-USB3.0 monitor W7,64bit ASIO TP2/KS4 - works a treat.

which drivers are you using please?

I have FW 3028 and driver version 2.1.19 win7x64 which i’m told is the very latest.

TIA

Audio or USB driver?

thats the FW and driver of the USB3 host, you may have a little utility that allows you to turn off the powersave, it shows the FW and driver … it does on mine anyway !

Had problems with USB3 too, until I upgraded the drivers. Just go to dell.com and download the renesas drivers, worked a treat on my L501X!

@stephanV - I have the latest from Dell, and even more upto date ones direct from Renesas … weird that yours works and mine doesn’t (which is the same laptop more or less).

I’ve tried using Dells own windows build, a custom build, new partition, separate drive. No matter what i try i can’t get the audio working, or midi signals to respond correctly, the other 2 USB2 ports are fine, and USB3 in the port runs okay too.

It’s just anthing that relies on realtime streaming won’t work, it works okay with mac osx10.6.6 though, but i am not going to use a hackintosh for live gig work.

I consider myself somewhere of a PC/Laptop expert, being tech support for most of my working life, however this one has me pulling out what hair is left.

I’ll take on board anything useful anyone has to offer ..

peacenbeats

bump… as i still don’t have working audio streams … :disappointed:

What version number are your Renesas drivers? Mine are 2.0.34, you can download them here: Support Home | Dell US
See if these work?

Even with Renesas 2.0.34.0 I can’t get my audio 2 DJ to work with the USB3.0 ports on my new Dell XPS 15z laptop.

Driver nightmares all round so far. So annoying that it takes months for manufacturers to get their drivers up to date!

Any help really appreciated.

Thanks

That’s really weird.. sure you ain’t setting your latency too low? Set it a little higher and see if it helps.

No, nothing. I’ve tried turning off power management on the USB3.0 ports but still nothing. Seems that everything is installed fine - I can select the Audio 2 DJ WDM Audio Ch A 1|2 as default on Win 7 Sound settings but nothing will play. No system sounds upon test, nothing. The WMP progress bar doesn’t move.

Must be a USB3.0 issue. Seriously annoying.

Thanks for you help

HAHA, no way! Just found a USB 2.0 port hidden inside the eSata connector righ tnext to the USB 3.0 port. Whoops - sorry for wasting your time

Can users please publish their WORKING laptops with USB 3 thankyou.

NEC/Renasys working with Dell are blaming NI, i want to compile a list of users than can prove otherwise.

I have less than six moths left of the warentee of my new laptop and need to get a solution soon.

thanks all

I have the exact same problem, soundcard works fine in the USB ports on my new desktop, doesn’t work at all in the USB 3 ports on the XPS.

Refer them to this thread:

Loads of people having issues on USB3 ports on Dell machines with various peripherals. If you have any success please PM me.

you can try the latest NEC driver, which fixes loads of problems the Dells have …Dells driver is months out of date.

The very latest driver is 2.1.19 …you can find it on ā€œstation driversā€.

The latest FW which fixes the HD disconnection problem is FW 3028

the issues lay in which daughterboard revision you have, if like mine it’s A00 then it’s not going to work …ever !I tried to get the latest board (A02), but they won’t give me it.
I offered to buy it and pay their engineer to come to site and fit it (even though i’m in warentee etc.) - they said no.

so all i have left is to make a formal complaint to Dell that their product it’s not ā€œfit for purpose.ā€ That is the spec of the USB3 ports is supposed to be 100% backwards compatible. The curious thing is, the other USB2 port (not the eSata combo) is coming from the exact same chip as the USB3 … all three ports are on the same daughterboard.

Obviously Dell are saying that there’s nothing wrong with their ports, NI say theres nothing wrong with their KS4 design.

Then talking to the Dell engineer, he said he spoke to NI and NI have said the S4 will never work in USB3 ..

I wish someone would just be honest for a change … admit there’s a problem and get it fixed.

The thing is, if you have USB3 in your laptop, then it will have the NEC chip inside … it’s only very recently other manufactures like VIA are building USB3 chips ..

So we know that ā€œsomeā€ NEC chips are working, others are not … it’s really only down to specific changes that have been done at hardware level per manufacturer.

I call bullshit on what the Dell guy said. Who has ever been able to get NI to give a straight answer to anything?

So true … but it seems a lot of their kit is in this position …i guess they are keeping quiet until they know for sure where the problem resides.

There must be more people with an S4 and PC/MAC with USB3 … !!! someone help a brother out … get your specs out …

God thought it was the only problem, I just bought my dell n4110 14r and I’ve gone crazy trying to fix this problem with usb 3.0. when someone knows something please advise I had to connect an adapter to the only light hub usb 2.0 port to work and is very annoying I have 2 denon denon sc 2000 and 1600 dnx awaiting answers greetings and thanks

I think none of the Dells will work. They insist it’s NI’s fault making a poor driver, however they don’t make Denon’s, EMU’s (my shortboard 49) or any other bit of kit I have.

They sent a semi trained chimp around to my house (gold service contract), he connected a mouse (USB 1), THAT WORKED, SO THEREFORE ALL DEVICES WORK !

Suffice to say i am not happy !

They can’t differentiate between a mouse and a complex audio device. I eventually had the daughterboard swapped out, reflashed it to the latest FW, new drivers etc … and it doesn’t work either.

I am working with only two USB ports (eSata combo = USB2), and only connect the USB3 HD to the USB3 ports, I wanted to use the eSATA for disks.

Sell the laptop and buy another brand, i understand that the ASUS laptops work okay with the same chipset.
