Apple open sources ALAC codec… big news?
Apple this week open sourced their ALAC codec which is similar to FLAC.
This might be potentially big news since it is a royalty free open source license (apache) and could allow for companies like NAI to include ALAC without fear of being sued into oblivion.
So is this big news to anyone else besides me?
I’d love for Traktor to support ALAC…mostly because it’s a hack to get iTunes to play FLAC. Either one would work fine for me.
Traktor has supported 16bit (CD quality) ALAC for a few years now
Good to know traktor supports ALAC. Hopefully other media players will start picking this format up. My only gripe with FLAC is lack of support across Apple software and hardware as @mostapha spoke of.
Wait, really? You just saved me a lot of disk space. WAVs are huge.
And in Lion it is super-easy to convert to ALAC via the Finder contextual menu, see:
Very handy @ksandvik .. Thanks!
