Abyrne7 - Thanks for the share!
Ean - You rocked! Great to see controllerism in the spotlight. ![]()
I hope they correct it to get VCI right. Definitely a cool segment and great exposure.
Is anyone else not at all impressed by Eans controllerism demos? I know he has skill and I feel like he could do so much more than what he showed on there and in a lot of his demos, it seems like he’s holding back and not pushing it. If he wants to sell controllerism, he has to really push it and demonstrate it is capable of things beyond what anyone could do 5 minutes after discovering the hotcues on a CDJ (and I’ve seen 10x better cue juggling routines by people on CDJs).
I’m not saying he lacks the skill and couldn’t do it, I’m just saying controllerism has the potential for a lot more and he needs to take it a step further, the aerodynamic routine was good but that should be the standard for most of us here, I want my mind to be blown, oh and whatever he demoed on the show was weaksauce. He focuses too much of the gater/mulholland drive combo (I know he uses a different second effect, I use the drive which sounds better) which I think most of us got tired of after a couples hours of discovering it in traktor and using it to death. It sounds awesome don’t get me wrong, it is just twisting two knobs and the sound is very distinct to traktor and can be quickly overused, and once someone knows that you’re doing and it isn’t some mad crossfader scratching skills your audience will be unimpressed with it too. He is kind of disguising it here in some instances to make it look cooler by assigning it to the jogs and faders, which I actually thought of too to hide it a bit. ![]()
There are much better tracks that lend themselves to faster more mind blowing routines instead of slow underwhelming pecking at push buttons that doesn’t sound like anything special. Since he is essentially selling controllerism with his products he needs to do a better job of showing it off or finding someone who can.
Well, this is still a new thing for people. If the first things they see are just overly complicated and overwhelming they might be turned off thinking “I could never do that.” If they see something interesting that they could pull off they might be more likely to say “Shit, I could do that too. I’m gonna go spend my money to be a controllerist too.” The bad ones will stop at a certain point and the good ones will get more excited and dig deeper.
It totally does have the potential for a lot more. But we need to get people in doing simple things to start, and then build them up to much more exciting things.
And it LOOKS a lot different than doing it on CDJs, and that’s a big part of it too.
While that’s true he should have done something along the lines of the aerdynamic routine or that demo on the korg nanopad since it is more impressive and within any beginners reach. People also want to see the potential of a more advanced professional routine so they have something to work towards and come away saying “wow I want to be able to do that some day.” I don’t think seeing the latter and certainly if they have seen both will deter anyone, I expect it would do the opposite and send people straight to buy a controller or start saving for one.
Either way I thought he did a good job introducing the person that knows absolutley nothing about DJ ing to controllerism.
Right Xone, but that’s why we got this site.
When they come here they can see the more advanced stuff ![]()
I agree with dvls. i think that routine was perfect for getting controllerism out there. Its shows the possibilities of what we do, with out going over peoples heads. If they are interested they can research further.
ugh.. where did you come from…
you spread so much negativity with half of the things you write…
He was showing the very basics in that demonstration. No matter what, the average person who watched that show doesn’t know sh!t about controllerism. So I think him doing what he did was good for showing what is truelly being done so people can grasp what is being done. And your really gonna complain about the songs he chose? Really? No really??? man.
The big thing to remember here, is he wanted his demo to be interactive. He wanted the host to jump in. I think he purposely chose something accessible so it was fun, playful, and interactive. You have to remember that Ean is sponsored by Vestex. This means when he does something like this, he has to do it in a way that will sell their product. If he goes on a show like this and does something that looks impossible to a non-dj, it kills any interest that him being on the show might have created for Vestex’s product.
Agreed. I’m sure Ean is all for constructive criticism , but there are much better ways to express yourself without insulting the host of this forum. Saying things like “was not at all impressed” and “weaksauce” is probably not the best way to go about things.
Exactly
@Xonetacular
Put your money where your mouth is and show us your routine that would completely sell controllerism based on your claims against his song selection and FX use. This community is known for contructive, not destructive.
We all know he can do advanced shit, we can do advanced shit as well. The point is to spark the interest of the one kid who has mad skills in his head and with controllerism can apply in real time and blow us away. Its to create an initial interest. Mission accomplished.
Wow, totally awesome! Ean & DJTT are definitely on course for world domination!!
Big respect & much love for everything there doing to spread the word & let this be heard! Makes me proud to have an arcaded VCI lol (but seriously) ![]()
@ Xone**** Bro, seriously? Posting in here with stuff like that really isn’t cool! I thought he did an awesome job demonstrating the potential that lies with the arcaded vci! - Help them try & make it, Not Break it!
Cutta
Big Up’s.
I agree if it was so complicated, people would be turned off and not want to try it out for themselves.
OK
I see where some people have slammed or made comments of why the routine was short…
Well i’m going to give you all a lesson in Broadcasting 101
Eans segment was 6:26 on the broadcast very common for a segment.
Ok so you take an 60 min , subtract roughly 20 minutes for commercials subtract 2 min for show opening and close with credits, subtract 2 min for in-show promotions. which now leaves you with 35 minutes of actual show material. you break that into 6-8 min segments leaves you with 5 different product or people highlights.
People have a very short attention span when it comes to watching television
producers keep things short to keep a show upbeat for the reason of keeping a viewer on their channel.
The target audience has never heard of controllerism or has a slight clue what it is… Why was a simple routine used, Well to entice people and spark interest, get people to look at it and say wow, that’s cool i can do that. if you do something that is so complex or complicated that you actually do more harm than good, buy turning people off.
How the hell do I know this, Simple I work in Television… we should be grateful that the recognition we got was adequate. more now than just blogs and forums on the web were mass media is now starting to recognize digital DJ or Controllerism as coming to the forefront.
Embrace the fruits of our labors. as it us that are helping make this becore more mainstream…
DA, Animus and timmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmy are right on the button here.
Even though it may not have been the most advanced technical set E’s given us, it’s still a nice little demo of what can be done.
I must say I enjoyed the hell out of this one!!!
Anyone telling me different, is either jealouse or plain hating!
Wow. People here are really sensitive and need to grow some thicker skin, my criticism was constructive, I recognized his talents and said he has the potential and skill, and it was serious motivation and a wake up call for him and everyone else to take it a step further if they want to get people interested in controllerism. Also, a Daft Piunk routine would be much more accessible to that audience since every nerd loves them and it is just as easy; he could have spent 45 seconds doing some insane tricks to get people really interested while still showing the basics. Overall it was a great little segment, I’m just giving feedback so he can do it better if the opportunity comes up.
I think that’s what he and a lot of people here need, when you are constantly patted on the back and freak out over the slightest negativity to the point that no one says anything negative you are going to get too comfortable and not be motivated to do better, and that isn’t what even the most constructive criticism is. You can’t sugar coat everything because you’re afraid of stepping on someone’s toes or hurting their feelings and that’s the atmosphere the users of this forum have created and it needs to be shaken up; it isn’t effective and you need to be brutally honest or you are going to get too comfortable and not be motivated to do better.
Sometimes I feel this community is like everyone’s family when it comes to criticism. Family is a great thing, but if you only got advice from your family that praises whatever you do it will hurt you when you are in the real world. People need criticism and feedback, not all of it is going to be covered in sugar and whipped cream with cherries, it’s not being rude or being an asshole, it’s how it works.
I went to architecture school so I am very familiar with critiques, a few people would leave crying after every one and you are usually left feeling completely worthless after spending 160 hours on a project and being up for the last 60 hours straight. It sucks but damn does it push you to fix every mistake you made and take it a step further and produce some awesome things that you would never have though of or been driven to before. It’s an evil system but the professors and critics know it’s only to benefit you, maybe I’m more used to the reality of what real criticism is than most people here. What I posted here was covered in honey compared to the equivalent of what I’m used to.
No matter how good something is you can completely rip it apart, destroy a persons spirits and make them cry to build them up again stronger and better than before, but that’s a little extreme for an internet forum. I’m just saying the sensitivity of some of you and calling me an asshole over a little nice constructive criticism is absurd, it’s like crying over a paper cut and calling an ambulance. I’m sure I could think of a better analogy but that’s enough for now.
I have a man crush on Ean Golden after watching that. I’m betting you’ll be getting lots more sales for this christmas ![]()
Once again, this isn’t about your message’s intent, it’s about how you said it. No one said you can’t start a critical discussion. Trying to justify your use of “weaksauce” and other negative tones in your post by saying “hey, I could have been meaner” is laughable. Suggesting that your hard talking, keeping-it-real mentality is the only way to get your point across is pretty far fetched. You could have easily worded your post differently, still been critical, and managed not to blow smoke up Ean’s a$$.
…more flies w/ honey…
And this concludes today’s Internet 101 class… please turn your assignments in on my desk before leaving.
