seriously getting frustrated over this..i can’t figure out how to get under the miniscule 19.5kb limit. it just seems way too small for anything i’m trying to upload. i’ve whittled the design down to 60x60 using 7 colors (black, white, greys). in .gif and .png i get “cannot save image file” and “not vaild image file” errors. so .jpg is the only option. on the lowest setting in PS that will still allow to actually tell what the design is..it’s still too large. IT’S FCKING BLACK AND WHITE (and grey). seriously..i see people on here with multi color avatars all the time..wtf is going on?
well, finally got the filesize down. when opening a new document in PS, since i was only using black/white/greys, changing “color mode” from RGB to Grayscale reduces the filesize a lot. but..even after “save for web/devices” and using both .jpg and .gif, still getting the error “unable to save image”
what gives?
EDIT: think i found the issue:
upon a google search of the problem, someone mentioned making sure that the directory that the avatars are uploading to is writeable. it is possible in the server move that the permissions on this directory were changed, making it unable to save any images in that folder. this can be disproven easily, has anyone been able to change their avatar since the server move?
I used Save For Web, 100% JPG quality for mine and it’s just over 8k big… the SFW dialog should show you what size the output image will be, and you shouldn’t have to change to grayscale or anything, 80x80 is hard to get over 19k filesize
nah there’s something wacky with OSX’s interpretation of filesizes. it says my 8kb .jpg is like 32kb or something…weird. anyway, the problem is not the filesize anymore..just the saving it onto the server part
we do need 777 on the folder that’s being saved into. but upon further googling i found that this problem is quite common when a server move is made, so i think that’s the culprit.
Just fixed this. Thanks for the heads up! I just moved all forum attachments/images out of the database last night – I 777’d the attachments folder but forgot about the avatars.
