So suppose I want to have an easy to move set-up, with the center of control being the kontrol x1. I have an audio 4, so all I need is a good way to control crossfading, volume and eq (with two decks total). Are there any decent and hopefully cheap mixers that are very very compact and have just these features (as well as cueing)?
Well the least expensive solution would be the X-Session Pro (aka the Torq Mixlab). Really though, it would fit the bill. If you wanted a more “professional” solution, I would look elsewhere though.
Why do you need cueing on the mixer if you have an Audio 4? Have you though about using the X1 as the mixer? You have three pages to use so one of them could easily be mapped to mixer functions, there’s already a few mixer mappings out there but they all focus on four deck control. It takes a little getting used to encoders as faders, but it’s not that bad.
I’ve got my X1 mapped as mixer and used it on New Years to jam at a buddy’s house. It can be done but I wouldn’t use it for anything special. A mixer relieves tons of issues. I would personnaly get an Xsession midi mixer. On thing with that is that you have soundcard, mixer, and X1 to hook up USB cables to.
But for a simple party with the use of just a few effects 1 X1 works pretty good.
A friend has a gemini 626 for this purpose only, plays out on a regular basis, is a professional dj and producer, he just swapped to Traktor from CDJs, he doesn’t need an expensive mixer at home so sold his A&H for the cash and just busts the Gemini now. It serves his purpose, he bought it for like £50 on ebay.
Especially with an X1 (which implies no scratching), I’d get a vmc-002xl without thinking if they were still available.
In response to the gemini 626 suggestion…yeah. If you’re gigging with it (even house parties), you might want something better, but…I honestly tried to get a cheap vestax instead of my xone and couldn’t; I think vestax discontinued their low-end mixers. No one needs a xone in their bedroom unless they just want it as a toy.
Seriously, for what you want…basically any 2-channel mixer is fine…just don’t get something that a lot of people on forums complain about breaking all the time.
If it’s going to be your only mixer and you have the cash then start looking at something better…or if you just want it.
I went for this option too, though for different controllers.
I’m using a BCR2000 (surprise. ), a MIDIfighter, an Audio4DJ and a Reloop RMX-30 blackfire edition.
The BCR2000 and MIDIfighter are used for transfer controls, FX, beatjumps, loopcontrol. The Audio4DJ routes the channels to the appropriate channels of the mixer, and the mixer just does its job as a regular club mixer would.
The RMX30 is a nice mixer, feels great and doesn’t sound that bad either. SO I could recommend that one, as it’s not as expensive as most 2 or 3 channel mixers are.
