Beatport is really annoying the f*ck out of me with the restricted stuff.
I know they gotta play by the rules of the labels, but it seems that in the past months, things got REALLY, REALLY bad. I’m located in Canada and I’m about to just drop them. I bought just about 1k tracks with them over the years
Is there an legit alternative out there that has a similar selection?
Such BS. “Here’s my cash.” “Sorry you don’t have the rights for that.” They are basically forcing you to steal. Idiots. Who cares which label gets the cash as long as some of it gets to the artist.
There are reasons for territory restrictions. And your statement makes no sense… first you wanna steal the song, then you are preaching about just wanting the artist to get some money. You do realize that when you steal the track the artist gets nothing right?
It is mysterious that beatport has so many restricted tracks when I often find those are freely available via juno.co.uk, junodownload.com and masterbeat.com. In fact, the latter has really been ramping up their selection and now offers wav for most everything (i only buy wav… or cd or vinyl). Interestingly, MB has a dark blue Flash interface similar to BP. I hate it, esp. compared to the nice clean Juno interface, and it’s quite slow. But, MB generally has better prices than Juno.
Wanna know what I do when I can’t get a track off Beatport?, join their promo list, or buy it elsewhere.
If you condone music piracy (whatever excuse you think may justify it), might wanna keep that to yourself - some people on here do have legitimate labels they are running off Beatport or other services.
Learn to use and love proxies. They make the process of buying music MUCH easier, and everyone gets paid for their work. Once you have the tools in place and understand how it all works, territory restricted tracks only take an extra couple minutes to grab.
When an artist signs with a label, they put a territory restriction on where that label can sell that song. That way, if the song breaks big, they can go with a better localized label in another territory.
That is one way I know it works, there are probably many more!
That’s my point. I don’t condone stealing. But it’s not the buyers responsibility to find the “right” place to buy. It’s the sellers responsibility to make it accessible. If you are an artist or you have a label don’t bitch at the buyers, bitch at the sellers that are screwing your pocket with restrictions. Restrictions suck period. Listen to the buyers. “The customer is always right”.
Using a proxy is a security disaster waiting to happen. That masterbeat.com site feels like a re-skin of beatport, this is so weird!! Junodownload looks alright. And fuck off to the tossers who pirate their tracks. Electronic music is such a small market these days, it’s important to encourage the guys.
