Building a Setup

Building a Setup

Hi all, just a quick query, looking for a spot of advice.

I’m just starting to build my DDJ setup, and currently have a Numark Mixtrack Pro, and an M-Audio Ozone MIDI Keyboard, using Traktor. I’m basically a bit miffed as to what to spend my next £200-£400 on, everything could be useful, but I basically want the most useful piece next.

Been thinking about getting a Maschine, to add a bit more personality to my mixing, but I’m undecided. A mixer would be good, but I have no idea where to start.

Thanks.

Think about how many decks you would like to mix on, if you would like to be able to play cds/vinyl, or even use timecode some day. Remember : a good mixer is never a bad buy, a good 4 channel mixer gives you a lot of flexibility and room for more creativity, might cost a little more than your budget tho.. Buying a maschine (or basically any no-mixer controller) should be replacing your keyboard i think? Are you happy with the way you mix right now? (Using internal mixing with your mixtrack?)

Yea save up to get a nice 4 ch mixer would be a good bet for you. It seems you want a modular setup. Once you have the mixer its easy to switch modular controllers in and out depending on your style

Mixer and Soundcard … dont forget the external soundcard once you go modular.

ohh good call. I still have never had an external. Ive always had them built into the controller

You can always get one of these babys : http://co.native-instruments.com/index.php?id=tscratchcertified&L=1
Do some math and you will see buying traktor scratch certified will cost you about the same as a mixer + soundcard. Buying my zero4 was my best buy ever, no cable spaghetti for me anymore, just master and booth out

I wish I could buy one of those babys! that does seem to be the way to go, but I assume having a separate sound card would come in handy if you have different setups for different gigs

only if you want to change mixer right?

If you plan on taking the 4D to a gig you are in the clear. The 4D is a breeze to set up and has more than ample sound channels to build a very flexible setup (22 channels!)

It allows you to connect anything digital, have some MIDI clock control on the mixer itself AND still leaves room for external hardware effects processors + timecode vinyls too.

I have a flight case for it. It’s cheap and good quality.

Here you can buy them second hand for about €900. You can sell your mixtrack pro and maybe even your keyboard…

time for me to move to EU.

Shipping is about $80. I’d be happy to try to bring you in contact with a Dutch seller…
