Buying a new laptop, check these specs (and droool)

So I’ve had my Inspiron 6400 for almost 3 years now and it is a beautiful piece of Dell awesomeness but it’s time for a proper upgrade and this is a massive package I found at the UK DELL store.

Components
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T8100 (2.10 GHz, 800 MHz FSB, 3 MB L2 cache)
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium SP1- English
1Yr XPS Premium Warranty Support - Priority Call In and Onsite Support
2.0 mega pixel Camera for CCFL Display
13.3" UltraSharp™ WXGA (1280x800) CCFL Display (220nits) with TrueLife™
Biometric Fingerprint Reader
4096MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x2048]
500GB Serial ATA (5400RPM) Hard Drive
128MB nVidia® GeForce® 8400M GS
Dell™ TrueMobile 355 internal Bluetooth Module - European
Intel® Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-Card - Europe - Core 2 Duo Processors

All of this for the awesome price of about 950 euro.

Are you as blown away by this as I am? It is a one day offer only so, give me your feedback, just to satisfy my curiosity and unhealthy need for reassurance.

To tell you the truth, the specs on this are not all that impressive.

But it should run Traktor just fine!

You are aware I’m talking about a laptop right?

Nice, I gave up of PC’s! Im going to the dark side.

To the dark side you have gone over? Then kill you, I must.

…you dont know the power of the dark side (now w/intel chips!)

haha touché. No, in all honesty I was about to turn to Macbook and I had great hopes for the new versions but when it finally dropped, at such a high price still, shit configed and with firewire taken away, I swore I wouldn’t cheat on Dell.

  • This config is pretty much the same as the new macbook pro, but costs less then half the price. I got money, but I don’t whipe my ass with it nonchalantly enough to pay so much for trivial design (which is not trivial, but a masterpiece, but never the less)

I hear you about the price, but you always get for what you pay for. I can say I hate dell, but I prefer a toshiba, but traktor is not to crazy about toshiba with dual core processors. So I said wtf ill just get a mb

I recommend you shop around some more bro…you can def find laptops with better specs for more or less the same price..im also in the market for a laptop

To True. Those specs for that price aren’t that flash.

i just picked up a black mb for 1k, it matches my “SE” and im going to be using my audio 8, that all i really need.

Still questioning if I want to by a PC laptop or a MBPro in the not to near future.

For me, it’s more of a firewire question. I have been using a Dell Latitude D620 for my work, since it came out, and it is still working properly!
(I do have Ableton and Traktor installed on it. )
Okay I do have a freaky wifi with it, but I can make do with that.

Firewire is about to be obsolete when usb3 releases…so i suggest you wait til the not near future to start torturing yourself with what you want to buy…i always waste a shit load of time contemplating if i should go with “A” or go with “B” and always end up kicking my own ass with going with “C” which was never in the factor to begin with..

Oh come on guys. If you want to question someone, that’s all good but you have to be able to put your links where your mouths are

If you are only going to say “that’s not a good deal, there are a lot better deals for the same money out there”… that doesn’t help me, nor you. So by all means, I did post this to become more enlightened but if you want to help, don’t just point out what’s wrong. Be constructive.

So consider this my official challenge to you, to find a 13 inch lightweight laptop with the same, similar or better specs for about the same money.

(I also agree about firewire, it’s about to die out with the release of USB 3.0 so I wouldn’t worry to much about it.)

Well, if the hybrid mixer and controller I am looking for is still with firewire only and USB3.0 won’t be available and stable for a sound year or year and a half, my choice is easily made.

Looks like a good deal. It’s an XPS, yeah?

The Dell XPS series are gorgeous, nicer than MBs imo, certainly cheaper. If/when I upgrade I’m going for the 15" with the WUXGA screen. Nuff desktop real estate for 4 decks and more besides.

I agree, they say the end of 2009 and maybe the start of 2010 and thats only when we start to begin to see products. I suspect decent quality usb 3.0 soundcards wont be the first devices hitting the shelves in the early days either - so i would hardly advise waiting.

Do whats right at the moment for your setup until USB 3.0 and more information about upcomming devices is more clear, only then i might advise waiting.

As for XPS’s i dont think there is any real big reasons to go with that range of computers, all they do is have better graphics chipsets which we as djs dont really utilise(maybe one day when software catches up)- if you go with a lower range model you can save yourself some $ which you can spend on stuff like a better CPU, more ram, higher res monitor.

I bought my laptop at the very tail end of last year and basicly bought the best non-XPS laptop i could get my hands on. That allowed me to get a PC for audio thats better than an XPS that cost at the same time the same ammount of money. Infact its nearly a year later and laptop still has pretty decent specs compared to whats on sale.

Dell Inspiron 1720 - Intel Core 2 Duo - T9300 - 2.5ghz - 45nm core - 4GB RAM @ 667mhz - 2x 250gb hdd’s - 17" full HD(1920x1200). I wouldnt say Dell make the best laptops under the sun, but they are reliable. The price was hands down better than anything else i could get my hands on due to good deals that were on at the time so it made it a no brainer.

Yes indeed, XPS it is.

Challenge accepted

$1000 Euro == $1820 Aus

For $1,831.50 you on the Aus dell website you can get a custom Studio 15 laptop with these specs -

15.4" - 1280X800 Monitor
4gb Ram
Intel(R) Core™2 Duo Processor P8400 (2.26GHz, 3MB Cache, 1066 MHz FSB)
500GB SATA Hard Drive - i would personally downgrade the hdd to a 400GB and upgrade the CPU, but thats just me
256MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450

I would have beefed up the 13" version but for some stupid reason nothing on it could be customised :\
