Calling on all Rane TTM SL users!!
Seeing as I’m in the market for a pro battle mixer, I’m seriously thinking about buying the serato edition of the Rane TTM, I just wondered if it’s pos to use it’s midi capabilities with other software than serato? Plus whats the score with the built in serato interface, is that Serato only, or can I run any music app through it??
Silly me, asking about a scratch mixer on a digital site. Come on people some one must know something??
I would choose most mixers on that list before the TTM…
good luck trying to get any midi msgs from the mixer for other programs aside from SSL or Ableton. Its a great mixer, I’ved used it several times when playing at clubs and if Serato SSL is going to be the route your going to take. Ill say its the best mixer next to the 68.
Thanks your thoughts JesC, stupid tight Rane. Such a shame you can’t use those controls for other software. I am a massive Traktor fan boy but I’ve been looking at the TTM 56s for a long time now, my mate keeps his in our studio and I much prefer it over my vestax 08 or pioneer 707. But considering the TTM 57sl is only £200 for more than the TTM 56 I thought I should take advantage and get serato for only £200, been wanting to check out video mixing for a while to.
@TABS - I’m very interested to know what your beef is with the TTM?? After all it is widely recognized by the majority of turntablist as the best scratch dj / battle mixer ever to be made. Plus I’m confused by the innofader link too. One of the chief reason’s to buy a TTM is that it’s one of the very few battle mixer’s to have top of the range magnetic faders already installed. True the cut on the fader is a little unique when you first scratch with it but I love it now I got my head round the soft ish cut..
There is no mixer around that is more pleasant to play on than the Ranes – I’ve had my 56 since they first came out and I still love it. I’ve used the 57 too and it’s worth the extra bucks if you’re going to use serato but if you’re not, stick to the 56. As a straight up mixer the only real difference is the kill switches (which I’d love to have but don’t really need), and the 57 is too cluttered if you can’t actually use the extra buttons and such.
With all do respect to Qbert and all the Vestax Folks,The Rane TTM 56 is the best scratch mixer hands down. Have used Numark, Vestax, Roland etc. The build quality is second to none. Have been using the 56 and the sl1 for at least 4 years now. No issues on the crossfader, on the line inputs …nothing just straight BUSINESS! The new Allen and Heath Mixers look pretty interesting but have never tried. Was a little leery about the all in one configuration of the ttm 57. Maybe a 68 in a few years but I absolutely love the ttm56.
I forgot to mention, one major flaw with the 57 that I have personally seem is the fader caps always fly off. most of the time when I play at clubs…the caps are missing.
you wont be able to use the extra controls (MIDI) or the sound card with anything other than SSL, unfortunately.
i love the feel of all the traditional mixer controls on the 57 and i used it here and there at different clubs when i was still using SSL, but the extra controls on that mixer are terrible imo… design, feel, and implementation are all pretty crummy. all the fx are software based, so you couldnt use them on external sources, and the 1-6 cue buttons were really tiny and hard to hit without constantly staring at the mixer to make sure you werent triggering the wrong button…
luckily theyve fixed a lot of those problems with the 68 (bigger cue buttons, hardware based FX) but ofcourse that is a much more expensive mixer.
I’m guessing they are pulled off rather than “flying” off. Unless there is a major difference between the 56 and 57, you’ve got to be a really aggressive scratcher – as in not-knowing-what-you’re-doing aggressive, not just heavy-handed – to actually make the fader caps fly off. I’ve never had that happen under normal usage.
Thanks for the input people, much appreciated. From looking at pictures I would agree that the SSL controls appear badly placed, awkward and small. But I think its worth reminding our self’s the age of the mixer being in the early years of the development of digital dj’s. Obviously they answered a lot of the small control issues with the new 4 channel Rane mothership, but my Zero4/soon to be replaced by the S4 takes care of my 4 channel needs. The 57 will be a great replacement for my vestax 08.
I have on occasion been guilty of flying fader syndrome on not just the 56 but also mixers with P&G faders installed. Never happened to me with any Vestax I’ve owned or my Trusty pioneer 707 tho. So I think its not just down to over aggressive power scratching or design floor, but also down to wear and how some dj’s move there hand when cutting it up.
Any serious scratch dj will know that when a cross fader has had heavy use over a couple of years the fader cap will begin to loosen, hence flying fader. For example I’m on my third fader cap for my pro x fade that I’ve had for five years now, as I worn the previous caps. But if you can’t find replacements for wobbly loose caps, it’s easy to over come by using tiny bits of thin card or paper to pack out the fader stem.
Mabe flying fader syndrome is the bi product of a thicker fader stem, as I said it’s never happened to me on any of my previous vestax or my pioneer 707. But the problem with thinner fader stems is that after a few years of heavy scratching, they develop ye old lean, which always scares me to think it’s going to snap soon. (I’ve only ever snapped after market P&G faders, which was a widely reported issue/design floor of an other wise awesome fader)
