Can the Kontrol S4 really be beaten in terms of practicality?

I was recently pondering grabbing a good mixer and some turntables down the line for a timecode setup, but then I realized that I could just replace everything I currently have with an S4, then use it as a 4 channel timecode mixer eventually. This got me to thinking, is there really any option that is more practical for such an excellent price as the S4?

So for this reason I ask, what are your thoughts? Can you think of anything that offers such an excellent balance of practicality and functionality as the S4?

I think you nailed it on the head.

I suppose it can’t be beaten for home/party use practicality.

Good luck fitting one in the average club booth though.

yup pretty much. i want some turntables tho and imma get some one day

Not the most practical thing for me, but I use VDJ. It’d be a great controller, but I don’t want to pay extra for the S4 software I wouldn’t use.

The VCI maybe, just because of the price… But yea, it’s pretty hard to beat if your aiming for practicality. I like a bulky unpractical setup that gives me more options though ;D

This’ll never happen, it’s technically impossible.

I’m gettin’ the ts4, so instead of thinkin’ about all the small booths, I’ll only take gigs that have a LARGE stage. Nuff said…

It’s all in the eyes of the beholder.

Really though, that’s what it is.

he just needs and extra pair of ins, but still can use the s4 as mixer

fyp

in terms of practicality? completely.

if your a club dj an s4 just isnt that sensible tbh. id much rather just have to carry my laptop, a soundcard and a small midi controller such as an x1 or korg nanowhatever with traktor scratch than lug an s4 about. No matter any controller you get i doubt anyone is gonna disagree that its still a lot nicer to mix with cdj’s

once the new version of traktor is out the s4 wont have much going for it other than being an “all in one solution”

he uses it to control the internal mixer, did i REALLY needed to clarify that?

besides, it’s basically the same than most (digital) mixers out there.

^ yep. Two channel ins to control the timecode and then control the sample banks internally.

I don’t think many folks are going to hook up 4 1200’s or 4 CDJ2000’s to an S4.

But wouldn’t it look awesome if they did…

I understand why people think this but seriously how can people be bothered carrying it around with them to clubs??

Clubs i regularly play at i know the set up so i always just turn up with 4 mp3 CD’s now. But soon to be TSP with my X1 which even then i will find a pain in the ass.

Why is it a pain?

Do you gig every night?

Or weekly even?

My thoughts are that if it would help me perform to a higher standard…pushing the boundaries etc…then i would lug it around!

I carry an APC40…VCI100…Macbook…Audio 4…Cans…Cables…USB Hub…and the kitchen sink!

I might not have space for it all, but then i am able to use part of this setup at least.

I will endure the pain if it is worth it…which i think it is!

Sure…the crowd might not catch every sample you dropped etc…but hey…you feel good after a solid session no?

I have always played for myself…sure i want the crowd to be pleased as well, but firstly its ME.

If I am not enjoying myself…the crowd will see and feel this.

If I am cooking it up and having fun…trust me…this pours over into the crowd…and its game on as usual.

(oh, and I’m not a huge fan of the platters tbh, I even prefer the VCI-100 platter, and neither are a patch on vinyl)

s4 plus tts!
