Can you be a legit DJ if…

Alright, basically I’ve gone through most of my dubstep tracks and set cue points in all of the samples, and I use those primarily for transitions. It has worked pretty well in my opinion and makes for interesting results. But when I watch videos of people mixing I start to feel inferior. I don’t cue songs, I don’t really use effects or do anything crazy with the knobs and sliders. So… Is that still legit DJing?

Oh and if my description doesn’t make a bit of damn sense then just listen to my mix here.

I think you can be, but I also think you need to push yourself and start experimenting with a little FX love. Don’t go crazy just a little here and there.

i feel the same way.

just REALLY focus on making sure the 2 tracks sound good together. no one can say you suck if your mix sounds solid as a tank

id rather see someone blend 2 tracks together really well than have to mess around with fx to try and mask them clashing.

No, sorry. You are not a legit DJ because you do not mix in the legit style outlined in section 504 of the official DJ handbook.

Dangit now i need to reread the handbook again…

i guess it’s open for interpretation…

but if you recognize there is room for improvement why not just push yourself that extra mile, experiment a bit and practice some new techniques… maybe try out some of the things you see in these videos or other people’s mixes that appeals to you.

once the basic things you already do become second nature you’ll naturally want to challenge yourself i think, just take your time with it man.

basics first. tricks second. blatant showboating third* :stuck_out_tongue:

Lots of DJ’s don’t even touch FX, but I do think their what take it to the next level. I’d say your a DJ by all means, you might even be better without FX.

the big complaint i have a with a lot of traktor pro dj’s that play out is at least in l.a. tend to use effects WAY too much. to the point of absolute predictability.

you found beatmasher, echo, and delay. you maded a super knob.

you get a cookie.

think of a dj mix like a good meal. think of effects as spices.

dont dump the spice rack onto a fine meal. it will only end up tasting like shit.

just a little here and a little there to liven up the taste.

Same here. Song selection and seamless transitions are much more important than effects. Delay or Rever or Filter during some breakdowns or vocals and your set.

You should probably start at your self esteem and work your way up from there.

I know my opinion does not hold nearly the same weight as some of the more seasoned DJ’s around here, but even before coming into DJ’ing I always felt that coming to an incredible result was more important than how you get there.

I’ve gotten into DJ’ing through my interest in controllers and tech, specifically designing and building them, so I suppose I should be of the opinion that it’s the technology that should take us to the promise land, not the artists. I don’t think so, however. I can see the glamour and the steal in mixing for four hours only on a pair of TTs, but my motivation for designing gear is that new tech should enable expression and further creativity, possibly letting the user go to new places and play different kinds of music.

In the end, I’d rather go to a club playing a solid mix, than go somewhere to a see a guy looking cool with a pair of turntables.

eh, i don’t really consider anyone as dj’s anymore
not even myself

your an artist. do things the way you feel is a good way.

dj’s are disc jockies
and theres not many true dj’s around

(not trying to be rude)

that may sound different then the way i think of it. but whatever ha.
and yeah, don’t go overboard on effects. yuck. lol
the only effects i use is a gater occasionally and i use a slight reverb and a filter with build ups

effects a dj does not make

I’ll keep saying this. You can only be a legit DJ if you have a name like DJ 5 Dolla Holla and your mom bought you Serato.

Serato is necessary cause it doesn’t have as many effects.

Oh and bitches. I personally say Bitches and cake (or bitches and blunts) but you have to have bitches before being a legit DJ.

Cliff notes:

Name like DJ 5 Dolla Holla
Mom bought you Serato
Bitches (and cake)
