CDJs, new gen vs old gen

CDJs, new gen vs old gen

Hi dudes,

Long story short, I’m wanting to get the feel of the club standard in my home. The clubs where I live have varying gear, around half are still using CDJ1000 MK3s whilst the other half are have CDJ2000s.

Being that I want to be versatile and play anywhere, I can see myself playing from CDs (as opposed to USB/SD). This leaves me with a tough choice, I can either spend £700 and get a used pair of CDJ 1000 MK3s (which are obviously outdated now) or spend around £1300-1400 and get a new pair of CDJ 850s which have all the up-to-date functionality of the 2000s (1400 is my absolute limit).

Bearing in mind the reason I am purchasing the CDJs is to get the club standard feel at home and the fact that I will be spinning with CDs either way, what would you consider to be the best option?

I say get the newer decks…I had the MK3s and while I loved them…having no quantized loops makes it difficult to be really creative and expressive on stage

It should be mentioned that the CDJ 850s don’t have quantised loops either, have to step up to the 900s for that (about 1800 for a pair). Thanks for your reply!

i’d go for the 850’s for sure… or of course the 900’s if budget somehow allowed for it.

Regardless of what the clubs have now they WILL in the next year or so upgrade to 850’s / 900’s or 2k’s and you’ll have the very real option of doing away with your CD collection altogether and either use your Laptop Directly plugged into them or using Rekordbox prepared USB keys.

Think you can pre-set your loops with rekordbox preparation, cant you ?

850’s would seem to give you the best of both worlds, live in the past and prepare for the future at the same time.

Cheers Deevey, really useful input. I see what you mean, think I’ll try as hard as I can to save and get some second hand CDJ 900s, really feel like quantized looping is important.

Seems to be quite a few pairs or 900’s on ebay.co.uk for around £1400

Ethernet Link is also a really nice benefit of the 900s over the 850s.

yeah, i’d say that the link feature is the key selling point..

However the 850’s is better value for money if you use CDs and various usb keys!

You also get Slip mode, Quantized loops, and HID compatibility with Traktor.
