DISCLAIMER : To run all this stuff, you will need a monster computer (or two). DISCLAIMER 2 : Prices are off the top of my head, but are accurate give or take 10% I think.
You will find 4 demos at the end so you can hear what all this stuff is capable of.
ESSENTIAL LIBRARIES FOR THE FILM / GAME / TV COMPOSER

  • ProjectSAM Symphobia 1 and 2 $2,500 – http://www.projectsam.com
Simply the best ‘general’ orchestral library out there. Needs to be complimented with other libraries, but for the ‘phat’ sound, this can’t be beat.

  • ProjectSAM Orchestral Brass Classic $400 – http://www.projectsam.com
Still after many years, the best brass library on the market.

  • Cinesamples Hollywoodwinds $300 – http://www.cinesamples.com
The best woodwind library on the market – particularly for orchestration purposes.

  • Vienna Symphonic Library – $it depends – Solo Woodwinds – http://www.vsl.co.at
The best for more intimate writing with wind instruments.

Audiobro LA Scoring Strings – $1,100 – http://www.audiobro.com
Amazing library for intimate string sounds, but requires a lot of knowledge to get it sounding good.

  • Eastwest Orchestra (Percussion only) $999 – http://www.soundsonline.com
Eastwest’s orchestra sounds are horribly dated. Only the percussion is any good. (Hollywood Strings is a new addition, but it’s too big, and too bloated for my tastes)

  • Tonehammer Requiem $500 – http://www.tonehammer.com
This choir library is incredible. Sounds blockbuster quality.

  • Spectrasonics Stylus RMX $300 – http://www.spectrasonics.net
Essential loop-based plugin for percussion. Incredible sound quality and great FX engine.

  • Native Instruments Komplete 7 $550 ($250 for upgrade) – http://www.native-instruments.com
If you haven’t got Komplete before, than Komplete 7 is an essential purchase, so much great content. If you have Komplete 6 and are considering upgrading, it’s not worth the upgrade price.

  • Spectrasonics Omnisphere / Trillian $800 together – http://www.spectrasonics.net

Omnisphere is a very powerful but slightly bloated synth with incredibly unique sounds. Trillian is the best bass library on the market.

OTHER LIBRARIES / COMPANIES YOU NEED TO CONSIDER .

Tonehammer – http://www.tonehammer.com
All of Tonehammer’s libraries are phenomenal, particularly the epic percussion set. Well programmed, easy to use. Note: They require Kontakt. I own all of Tonehammer’s libraries (I am a big fanboy…) – I have never ever been disappointed.

Nine Volt Audio – http://www.ninevoltaudio.com
Great loop libaraies for use in Stylus RMX . They also supply REX files, so can work in any seqeuncer. They have saved me many times on projects with tight deadlines.

Camel Audio – http://www.camelaudio.com
Makers of the unbelievable synth Alchemy, which comes with a ton of cheap expansions. I love this synth.

Samplelogic – http://www.samplelogic.com
Makers of Morphestra, Cinematic Guitars, and the amazing Ambience Impacts
Rhythms. Great for people who want cutting edge sounds in their products.

Evolve – http://www.heavyocity.com
AMAZING sound quality from these guys. If the sounds weren’t so niche, I’d regard them as essential for any composer.

Eastwest – http://www.soundsonline.com
I own all the Eastwest libraries, here is a quick review.
Silk – amazing. RA – dated. Gypsy – phenomenal solo violin sound, great accordions, great cimbalon, average everything else. The Dark Side – amazing, but very genre-specific. Fab Four – overpriced. Voices Of Passion – overpriced. SD2 – amazing. Pianos – UNBELIEVABLE

Towner, thank you for this excellent info!

I personally use Ableton’s OIC a lot- maybe too much.

Thanks very much! I’ll check them all.

If you have Ableton’s Tension synth, there are some (decent) presents.

Kontakt from Native has the most expressive strings I’ve found.
