Cheapest way to connect my ipad2 to midi-usb?

Cheapest way to connect my ipad2 to midi-usb?

Ok since alot of apps are doing core-midi now i want to jump on it.

I have an ipad 2, the apple camera adapter and a midi to usb cable

so it goes like this

Ipad2>Cam Adapter>Usb to midi cable>???>Macbook

so what is the cheapest missing piece of my puzzle (some sort of i/o?)
or is there something else i can connect from the cam adapter straight to the mac?

thanks.

you need another usb to midi adaptor I think!

it’s a slightly weird way of doing things tbh though…you’re basically converting usb to midi and then midi back to usb.

Correct … and 2 female midi to midi adapters to connect the midi cables if you don’t want to snip the midi connectors off and join the wires yourself.

does TouchOSC work with a midi cable from the iPad??

why not use a usb to usb from the iPad camera connection?

I’ve used MidiTouch and TouchOSC with the camera kit and USB to midi leads.

AFAIK that only works with a jailbroken iPad and a Cydia USB network app.

Yeah it does

but it has to be usb to midi.

and midi over usb only works on ipads

Hey Hippie, I’m getting some packet loss with using TouchOSC over wifi, can you explain more or send me a link to what I can do with these Cydia USB network app?
I have a jailbroken iPad 1, a camera connection kit but no midi-to-usb cable :disappointed:
Do I need this cable or I can do with usb-usb cable and Cam. Conn. Kit alone ?

I read it in this thread on the TouchOSC forums

The USB to midi leads I’m using are only $5 each (delivered) on eBay so I’ve not tried using MyWi or any of the other apps that allow you to send network data via USB tbh.

And there is more or less latency than use adhoc wifi connection?

This:

Ok, maybe not the cheapest, but the coolest :sunglasses:

I’m not noticing any latency or dropped messages.

The only problem I have is a known Traktor one, when selecting FX it sometimes slurs the audio.

Using 2 of these

and 2 of these to join them together

You could snip the midi connectors off and join the wires instead tho if you’re not going to use the cables for anything else.

I believe Nem0nic and others with midi connectors on their hardware like the Audio8 are just using 1 USB to midi lead

Thank you so much hippie
One last question
Can your ipad be charged over usb using these cables adapters and all?

No - the slot is in use by the camera kit.
I don’t know if there’s a special camera kit that allows for charging but the standard ones don’t. Some of the 5 in 1s say that the mini USB port is for data and charging but I’ve not got a high powered USB port to test whether they mean that it’s for charging the iPad or the device connected to the mini USB and suspect it’s just a bad translation in the item description anyway tbh.

roger that,
I need to remember to charge the ipad before the set then :stuck_out_tongue:
