My decision at the time I bought (early spring of this year) was between the jbl lsr305 and the yamaha hs5. I liked the jbl sound better and had newer technology in them from what I understood, so I went with them and am happy thus far. I’d echo the opinion that KRKs sound bass heavy to me.

mostapha: Although I already got monitors, I appreciate your long in depth posts with your thoughts on the ones at your local GC.

Next thing I’m in the market for that’ll take me forever to decide is a PA unit. Not trying to start a new thread, just saying I know how hard indecision can be on big purchases.

I recently just got the A5x, I mainly produce House/Techno.

The main reason I didn’t go bigger is because of room/volume restraints, I have to say although I’ve only had them for a couple of weeks now, I’m getting on really well with them. No they don’t go as loud as the KRK’s, but I also don’t need to have them as loud, I can actually hear the mid and high’s.

Now with the bass, no they don’t go as low as the KRK’s but they also don’t smear the sound of the bass, it stays even down to where the bass rolls off. There is a slight issue with port chuffing at high volumes, but because I’m monitoring quiet I rarely have them that loud so it’s a bit of a non issue for me. Further down the line I will invest in a sub but not until Ive moved into a different house where it would be possible.

I actually think the Adam’s work really well for House/Techno, and a lot of the mixes I made on the KRK’s have translated really well. Obviously I’m still learning the sound of the Adam’s and it will take a while before I truly trust my decisions while mixing on them. But I have to say it’s one of the best studio purchases I’ve made.

The adams definitely aren’t bad, they just aren’t as impressive (to my ears, in that room) as a couple others.

After doing more reading, it looks like my “woah” response to the KH120s was accurate. The question is whether they’re worth the money. I’m going to experiment with stands first, though, to make sure my cats can’t/won’t knock them down…'cuz I’d rather lose a $150 speaker that I don’t care about than a $750 speaker that I do.

From what I’ve read the KH120’s are suppose to be very very good and probably do outperform the A5x then again they are also twice the price of the Adam’s. It depends on what you want them for though, is this just for djing, production or both?

They’re for sounding good. Also, not going to happen right away. It’d wind up a combination, so overkill for djing but maybe worth it.

The yamahas seem off because they are really flat. I have the HS7 on my DJ rig and I get tired of the sound of them when mixing because they hide nothing. atm I’m in the process of separating my studiokit from my dj kit and I will buy some separate speakers for djing, something like a KRK 5. It’s enough for bedroom djing imo and is more suited for the purpose.

I can’t stand my krks anymore. I’m pretty sure I’m going to go with tannoy for my next set and either Neumann’s or events for my production rig when I get to redo my room.

i went the same route, except i got the hs5’s with the hs8 sub (craigslist guy was offloading this set up), and now have my krk’s separated for dj duty in the living room.

I’m really pleased with the yamaha sound, they sound a lot like how my mdr7506 headphones would be if they were just monitors instead of headphones. Would recommend.
