Nice, :: tear :: djtt!
DJTT receives faint praise from Musical Gods.
In an interview today Coldcut were reported as saying that DJTT is “nearly interesting” and may in the future be “worthy of some mild attention”.
We rock!
I like this part
i shat when i saw this… probably one of the highest honours imo.
doesn’t get much bigger than coldcut!
thats kinda like: your not ON the bottom but youre close and coming up though
lol let’s not get ahead of ourselves now, they never praised DJTT - they said Ean and controller djing was cool/interesting, DJTT was just mentioned so we didn’t confuse which Ean Golden they were talking about… ![]()
My favorite section (talking about traditional vs. digital djing):
MB: But enough of this rock and roll idiocy! I think it’s a fair question about what constitutes actual DJing now but not one that can be adequately answered.
JM: It can be answered by the floor. If the floor’s pumping; it’s DJing.
I like that one to.
Again Digital Djs need to distinguish themselves from previous generations of Djs. Why should you need approval from the old guard, music blogs, and social networks, is that going to make you feel better about yourselves or somehow make you a better Dj?![]()
Do you think playing the same old tracks everybody else plays will get you props. There are really no new sounds to speak of these days, djs are still playing the same old genres we were playing 25 years ago!
The only way this new generation of Djs will get its recognition is the way they present the music and make it their own.
Did Ean Golden really invent controllerism? Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t the Roland MC-505 built in 1998 wasn’t this the humble beginnings(cryptic at times) of what we now see as controllerism. Didn’t this device change the way we thought about making and performing music.
Ean Golden and his com padres are pioneers in the D.I.Y. style of Djing. This is what will set the new generation of digihead djs apart from its predecessors, being able to not only engineer their equipment but back that up with unique presentations and performances. the ground work is being SET!..and they used to say Kraftwerk wasn’t real music.
Ipod weddings
now ipod clubs…sigh
My enjoying that quote wasn’t meant to derail the thread into another “which type of djing is more legit” discussion. I’m way, way over it. I liked it in terms of context. Coldcut and the Ninjatune label have always been at the very forefront of progressing the art, extremely futuristic and forward-looking, but at the same time being one of the most well known groups/labels in terms of respecting the past. Coldcut and many of the artists on Ninjatune are turntable artists, djs using traditional, simple equipment to make some of the most influential sounds and mixes.
Yet, as their artist roster and interview show, they don’t give a f*** how the music is produced as long as it is DESTROYING cliche, breaking a new path. I dug the quote with all of that fresh in my mind.
Let’s keep the thread about Coldcut, and how some of the greats gave a nod to the ever awesome DJTT.
Tiiimmmberrrr. Legends
never really thought about it this way…
“Maybe it’s because I’m a boring nerd but I wanted more and more scratching on my records, not less and less, so what happened in the 90s was good for me but looking back not so good for scratching or hip hop. In the loosest of possible terms, as the sampler meant the DJ was gradually replaced by the producer in hip hop, wax technologists were shufffled away into their own genre, that of turtablism.”
also…
One thing I’ve been thinking recently is that if we’ve had the end of turntablism, then perhaps it’s time for ReTurntablism… It’s something that we’re working on at the moment. I’ve not seen anyone making this point and I find it quite interesting. What happened was the technical and wanky side of turntablism painted itself into a corner. The rest of us were shouting, ‘Scratch something different!’ And now the whole thing’s dead.
great article…everyone should read it…
I’ve cleared many floors in my time. Sometimes you have to, so you can start again. I’ll give you an example: do the kids really care if they’re at a massive rave watching ‘insert name of massive electronic artist who commands £200k per performance here’ who have just put on a hard drive and pressed play, instead of performing live? Do they care? Of course they fucking don’t. Should they care? Yes they fucking should. Because if someone is doing it live the energy is more effective, it isn’t just a commodity. But lots of people are happy with just a commodity. And fuck them. Eat your nice McDanceBurger and be sick. I’m just trying to get on with researching what I do and fucking things up.
