For the nearly 15+ years I have been managing my music on my computer I had always followed the simple rule of base core genres. Hip-Hop/Rap, R&B/Soul, Rock, Electronic, Jazz, Pop, Reggae, and Go-Go. I have a pretty extensive collection that I ripped on my own, and have always tried to follow this KISS pattern.
With the thought of going back into DJing I started to realize that it would have been much easier if I had organized into sub-genres and then create smart playlists to incorporate all the genres into a master genre. But the thought of sifting through 30,000 or so songs is daunting, especially those albums that redefine an artist, or should be classified under multiple genres.
I’m debating this too. I am thinking of retagging my stuff how beatport splits up genres so that my whole collection is consistent with my beatport purchases and I think they have a good balance of sub genres and not going overboard with subsubsubgenres.
It is just kind of daunting to get started with and I need to find a good ID3 tag editor for mac. I wish I could have a program scan all my files and search the tracks on beatport and adjust titles and tags appropriately.
Yes, I know this has been covered before, I know what software can be used, I know the methods.
However I was asking it from a practical standpoint. Asking from people who may have made the change, one way or another, and then did not like the end result.
Yeah that one’s a little weird, seems like they throw a lot of stuff that doesn’t quite fit into house music in there. Just curious, how would you split it up if you could reorganize beatport?
@OP: by using my method you can introduce your sub-genres over time. Doing a search on ‘House’ will bring up all sub-genres. And you’ll still have the sub-genres next to each other alphabetically in iTunes and Traktor.
Beatport has had an API for developers for a while.
Trainspotter is one such program that utilises it - http://www.tspotter.net/

@Xonetacular: I’d have Indie Dance and Nu Disco separate, because they’re not really related to each other. I just generally end up retagging quite a lot of stuff from Beatport generally.

edit: this looks cool now I just have to figure out how to use it right. I see it will search beatport for tracks but I’m not sure how to automatically grab the tags or get it to batch update it’s kind of confusing.

i’ve tended to just dump mp3’s in folders of a similar sounds/style/emotion/energy etc.
i read a lot of people here using itunes for their music management… i always used to hate it, never used it with my ipod, but am thinking maybe i need to look at it again.
how do people organise the actual folders that store your music? just by “date added” as opposed to genre/style etc? seems then u can only find your music using some music management app then tho?
i need some better way of managing my mp3’s before i end up with too many.
