DAW Upgrades

DAW Upgrades

Ok, so ive been an ableton user for about 4 yrs now. Love it to pieces. After studying an audio engineering degree and using pro tools every day during classes i bit the bullet and shelled out my hard earnt on pro tools 9. I bought it on the 28th of september. I just came across online that pro tools 10 is out, already!, and that they will only offer a free upgrade to people who bought it from the 1st of october onwards. Now i think this is pretty shitty customer loyalty. Ive only had pro tools for just over 3 weeks, barely had a chance to really use it at home and now they won’t offer me a free or very discounted upgrade. Just find it utter bullshit and needed to vent somewhere a little :stuck_out_tongue:

However, i will be hounding them about it until they offer me up a decent deal.

They have to draw the line somewhere an someone is always going to be day late. I would be mildly surprised if they didn’t offer you the upgrade as long as you can prove it was that date.

Call their tech support, but you probably can’t run it anyway.

Also…Avid isn’t particularly good about updates, release cycles, backwards compatibility, or basically anything else like that. A lot of “pro” studios are still on 8 HD because they don’t trust the upgrade yet.

Also…it’s a brand new version of Pro Tools. There’s a good chance it doesn’t run on the same hardware and that the overlap isn’t that ridiculous.

Basically…they know that most of their customers either bought on a whim and will probably bitch and moan but never would have really upgraded anyway…or they never upgrade because they wait until a version is stable and then build a computer specifically to run that version…and don’t update anything until it’s time to build/buy another computer.

That being said…if it’s still decoupled from avid hardware and runs on my laptop and OS version, I might look into PT10. 9 never ran on my early 2011 MBP when I looked.

Edit: I just looked it up again, and my 13" early 2011 MBP will not run PT 8, 9, or 10. It doesn’t look like it ever will. Thank you Avid, you just saved me a lot of money…your update habits have me firmly on Logic at home despite preferring Pro Tools.
