Depends on your price range. Senny HD25’s are a popular choice.
The Sony DJ range are very good for their price.
I use Denon HP-700 (had 1000’s, but they do not take much abuse) however I can’t fault the 700’s.
I woulda have thought you would have separate headphones for DJing, and for studio use..
I was going to get the Sennheisers for DJing anyway, with some Beyerdynamics for Studio cans. However, I found some great studio monitors (reviewed on here) for a low low price, and am going to plump for those instead.
Think I’ll get the Sennys then invest in studio cans in couple of months.
For DJ use (e.g. in loud environments) closed ear cups tend to offer better isolation and lower monitoring levels.
For production use (e.g. in relatively quiet environments) open ear cups tend to offer a better sense of the overall sound field and stereo separation. While not ideal, open cups are a good middle ground between headphones and monitors.
ill point out that open cups do bleed a lot of noise, which defeats the purpose of using headphones in the first place. usually because a housemate or other nearby person cant be disturbed by your music production, which is why your not using your monitors.
its a cruel reality.
I use HDJ1500s for DJing. I will also use them to reference in Ableton occasionally. Not the best for that, but it gets the job done. Key word for production use was “referencing”.. Not “monitoring”… So trying to strictly produce with them will be kinda hard.
Overall, I think they’re great.
Sony 7506
For $80 you cant afford not to have a pair lying around. Almost indestructible and sound ridiculously good for both production and Live use ![]()
I have a pair of HD25 Amperiors coming tomorrow mind you and kinda looking forward to comparing them.
NOt sure if you’re being serious or not? I read a couple of reviews on other respected forums and they seem to have a bad rep.
Pretty sure being Serious, if you are talking about audiophiles not liking them, well they tend to like their cans a bit more “musical” rather than revealing. From a DJ and Production aspect however that makes them ideal - you hear everything
The Sony’s are slightly harsh, analytical and detailed, every bad mixdown you put though them will sound 20 times worse than most other headphones (including other Sony’s), however if it sounds good on them, it will most likely sound fanfuckingtastic on a regular pair.
The only real complaints I have about them are:
I’ve DJ’d and produced with my MDR-V6’s (same headphone) for 15+ years & eventually ended up replacing them 3 years ago with 7506’s after many tried and failed attempts to get something else that sounded as I wanted to without spending $300
bad rep as in how? They don’t cost 300 dollars and sound like angel farts?
In other news I just got my Sennheiser HD25 Amperiors delivered today (factory refurb) - and would give them a big Thumbs up recommendation, so long as you keep your mixer volume down (18 ohms).
I had forgotten just how completely different the 7506 is to the HD25 in terms of EQ, a lot warmer on the ears and definitely much higher SPL without distortion.
I’m not too sure I’m cracked up about the bass hump of them outside the DJ box however, and the very high frequency (18khz+) is “gone” (can’t hear as pops or crackles from vinyl rips clearly anymore).
However I reckon they will be replacing my trusty 7506’s for the majority of daily tasks once I get used to the differences.
And they are only $99 on Newegg right now …bargain for a serious set of cans.
Hell buy both ![]()
7506’s are great phones for the money - they’re permanently attached to my DJ rig. But I don’t use them for production - have some Beyer 880 Pro’s when I use cans.
I recently switched from HD 25 to the new AIAIAI TMA-2 modular.
I just got the Young Guru preset (over ear soft fabric cups) and some extra “DJing” cups (on ear fake leather thingy) to switch them out. Voila. Perfect 2 in 1 headphones!
go to the music store and buy whats on special haha… most brands these days make a decent pair. Audio Technica, sony, Sennheiser, Pioneer, AIAIAI, etc…
I use my audio technica ath-m50x for production and DJ’ing and they work fine. They sound amazing for general listening as well.
I use my m35 in the streets and my shures in the studio
Worst advice ever ![]()
If you are in a music store, bring some tracks you know and love really well, and listen to as many pairs of different headphones as they have in stock
Measure twice, cut once.
to be fair I am on a first name basis with the local music store, so they tend to let me in on the sweet deals
they have never let me astray
