Depeche Mode Remix Contest

I taked to my contact thru Mute and they wanted to get more promotion then the last remix kit which was Martyr (BTW Great Track). Alot of Digital dj’s get there music thru beatport it was really a no brainer in my book.

I really didnt mind paying 4 bux for the stems, why? Cuz I love to work on my own DM remixes and with the stems you really get an idea on how the track was put together.

Plus I cant wait to hear some of the unoffical remixes that are going to end up on www.DmRemix.be (legal site, no offical dm music)

$4? I’ve spent it some stupid stuff, like a burger that I didnt eat cuz they got my order wrong. & Cigarettes…that people usually bum from me. Its no big deal. I can do this all day, we should make a thread this.

I could have got the damn stems for free but I really didnt want to wait until my friend emailed them to me.

Yeah that came out from left field, now I must become a super star dj!

Its funny tho, when people tell me that I cant do something. I get super powers and find a way to do it.

1st: You cant learn how to beatmatch…Learn when I was 12 yrs old
2nd: You cant be a Marine! You wont make it passed boot camp! Really
Corporal JesC! USMC 2001 - 2005, Iraq Vet '03! 1st Tank Battalion
3rd: You cant hook up 2 VCI’s fw1.3 on one Cmptr! Really I already did (More info soon)

**edit ** Another reason why not to share music. Some Big Name DJ’s (MGMT) leaked Fragile Tension before the album was even. Dave Gahan wasnt too happy and called them out on a interview. Soo much for a MGMT or Soulwax offical remix.

not sure if this is still on topic since this seems to have taken the paying-for-stems-debate direction but…

I just downloaded the tracks and will be entering soon. I also think I’ll be doing this more often. It will help me actually complete things. Im not disciplined enough to ever do it on my own and maybe if I involve myself in these sort of competitions more, I’ll be more productive.

Anyway, since I’ve never done one of these before I had a couple questions:

I notice samples that are missing from the collection that were in the original song (is it typical to not include everything that was in the original track?)

I notice the vocals have been “extracted” as you can hear background music in the samples. So, these are not the master vocal tracks. Is this typical and if so, why not make the masters available?

When they mention “uncleared samples” does that also include samples from the original track “Peace” that were not included in the download package?

Anybody here ever get to final stages or win any of these contests?

Anybody have any sketches yet of what they are working on?

Hey Jesc,

you heard Caspa’s “Wrong” dubstep remix?

www.myspace.com/caspadubstep

  1. Yes some snare and fx’s were missing, no big deal

  2. Those are the raw vocals, Dave didnt step into a booth

check this out. this is how they recorded wrong

  1. I wouldnt use any samples off the track off of the cd

  2. Still working on it.

  3. Nope just wanted to lay down some 4/4 around 130 bpm

Yeah it was a clean mix, i really dig it!

Read down a bit, you’ll figure it out

:stuck_out_tongue:

Ill save everyone the trouble…

Back on Topic please!

Mr R_909 when you have a rough mix we should check eachothers work out.

Most def!

I’ve got a veeeeeery rough mix Jes, u?

Anybody else?

I think he ment his name will always just be JesC not SupermixmastersickmusichorepervertkingskratcherillcontrolleristDJguyJesc .

  1. Even when vocals are recorded in a booth, it’s not unusual for there to be bleed from the headphones. Some engineers even record vocals with the monitors on. Bjork for example did a song where she recorded her vocals placed between two monitors, with one of them out of phase with the other, so they’d cancel on the recording.

  2. I won a remix contest recently - and the results are being released at the end of June.

I’m having a bash too. Only started it on Sunday, so i’ve got some basic loops but no arrangement yet. Gonna start arranging it tonight, but i don’t expect it’ll be anywhere near completed till more or less the end of the deadline.

I also entered, despite having to pay $4 and not retaining any rights. All these contests are mainly aimed at unknown aspiring producers (just like myself) and that could be a chance to gain some attention. Of course if you produce a fine remix.

Anyone finished theirs yet? care to send a link?

I’m about 3 mins into mine and it’s just reaching the buildy throw your hands up in the ayer and wiggle them around like YOU just don’t care bit.

I really wish he’d done the vocals in a booth though.

I’m about 30% done so far.. Let’s share here and vote for each other

I also participated in the Paul Van Dyk remix contest about a year ago, didn’t win though

My lack of sleep for the past 2 weeks (more than the normal lack of sleep) can be blamed on me working on my entry. Im going to have to haul ass to get it done by the 25th.

Right - first up:

Lovin the mix Cmc, especially the strange clappy noises in the intro and outro! Oh and lovely description, very …poetic…

Good luck in the comp man!

Good stuff man, excellently produced!

Let’s hear some of yours then!

REALLY fucking pist right now…

I’ve pretty much been staying up past 1AM most nights to work this shit out. I finnaly got something done that was decent, hopped over to Beatport in a mad dash and began the upload process at about 10:53PM (Pacific). It gave me the “processing” indication and at 11PM gave me the “window for submitting entries has closed”. I tried 2 more times with no luck. That’s bullshit.

I dont expect the thing to win but I’d really like to submit it with the rest of the folks for review who got theirs “on time”

Jess, dont suppose you have a contact for this contest do you?

Finished mine last minute, check it out:
