DJ Lessons

DJ Lessons

Hey guys

So I was wondering, if people started asking you to teach them to DJ what would you charge, if anything. I have been asked by a few people to show them the ropes and while I can’t teach scratching I can teach almost everything else for a mix DJ (EQ, faders, samples, most CD decks, effects, etc.). It would probably be around 1 hour a week or something.

I know that we have the Scratch Academy here which is, like, $300 an hour or something.

What would you guys ask for?

dude 300 bugs? expensive school!
i´m taking drum lessens by a stundent and pay like 15-17€ per 45 min.
i think like 40 dollars an hour would be a nice start?

Oh it’s bad. They offer classes and everything, and you get taught by “the best DJs in the world” or something, but it’s all based around hip-hop and scratching and stuff. And they use industry standards, like Reason 2.5 and SSL… :-/

anyway

I figured between $40 and $50 would work. When I was in high school and took private lessons for trumpet it was about $50 but that was 10 years ago and she was a, well, real musician, whereas I’m a pretend DJ

yes 40-50 bugs are totally acceptable…by the way cool to hear that people ask u to teach them how to dj, this must be givin u a warm feeling about the quality of your djing

better start working on a curriculum lol

A friend of mine is giving Ableton Live classes. He teaches a group of 6 and receives 15euros a person. So that’s 90 bucks per class.

Not too bad I guess.

not too bad at all, and a LOT less than what people around here charge for stuff like that.

if your going to do one on one dj lessons, and cover mixing/beat matching/equipment setup and break down/turntables/cd/digital. I would charge min 60/hr

Gonna cover mixing, beat matching, equipment set up, basic audio, break down of CDs and digital. Going to focus mainly on CDs cause I’m one of the very… very few in this scene in NYC who uses a laptop right now (Subvert being the other, and maybe one or two more floating around). Still a lot of stigma on it.

I figure between $50 and $60 per hour

when the beat matching comes up, there is a song called dead stars that is good teach people how to mix, and half ways into the song it has a nice break to mix in military fashion show!

Between $50 → $60 an hour is pretty reasonable i think for one on one tuition, hope it turns out well for you

If you get more a fair bit of interest you could run classes for a smaller fee per head but clean up more $ for an hours work.

Good luck !

depends on who your teaching

freinds i would do for free but if i had to do it on a regular base they have to bring the drinks
guys you don’t know i would charge.
girls if they are cute i would make them dance n**e

Jesc… I hate you… so much

See, that’s where the tear is. These kids aren’t friends, per se, but I know them from the clubs. shrug

yo mr. advocate! any updates with your teaching stuff? would like to know if u already started to teach and if yes what it´s like?

heh, we’ve got a “dj school” out here in portland. I’ve been thinking about dropping by and applying to teach a class on controllerism/midi. apparently it pays quite well for the teachers.

looks like u should try to get into the programm…dj-school-hijacking!!!

They need all the help they can get…if their “dj recital” club night last month was anything to show for it. hahaha

haha! sent them an email and they told me to come in today. w00t!

wtf! that sounds pretty amazing. you have the ability to show off and even get paid for it… no seriously u should go there and take the chance!

Heres my lesson
Open iTunes create a list with the tracks for the night.
Go to preferences and select crossfade between songs 12 songs
