exactly, the ONLY exception I could possibly think of is if their equipment malfunctioned and they had to switch to the pre-recorded version as back up.

Agreed, ESPECIALLY with 2 guys performing.
But, personally, I always bring my iPod and some cables with me, so that if my software ever does crash (knock on wood that it doesn’t) I’m not stuck rebooting and restarting with everyone staring at me in a silent room.

Disqualification should only be an option for those who broke the rules. My question to OP–what were the rules?
I participated in a cookie-eating contest a few years ago…they gave each of us a package of Chips Ahoy cookies, and a red Solo cup full of milk. The rules were simple–when you hear the whistle, eat as many cookies as you can in 5 minutes or if you finish your package before anyone else, you win.
At the whistle, one guy pulled our his own cup (much larger) and a long spoon. He began crushing cookies by the handful into his cup and using the spoon to mash them all up until every cookie was in crumbs. Then he poured the milk from the Solo cup into his cup and mixed it all to a pulp. He then chugged the concoction and was finished in 1 minute–meanwhile I was in the lead and had not even finished half of a sleeve. The crowd was in hysterics calling him a cheater. BUT the key is that there were no rules against the use of extra tools. The judges deliberated for a few minutes and declared him the victor feeling that it would be unfair to him since he technically didn’t break any rules. Simple as that.
I was pissed at the guy. It was a cheap way to win. But from his point of view, he went the extra mile knowing he could exploit the lack of rules.
If the comp stated that all mixing and editing needed to be done live on the fly, then yes, they broke the rules and should be DQ’d. If these rules were not stated (regardless of the assumptions we make as DJs) then shame on the bar/club for not making it more clear or having judges who know the difference.
Toontown is right, if it wasnt stated in the rules that they needed to mix their performance, rather whatever pleased the crowd the most.

Yeah but he still ATE the cookie. The whole theme was to eat the cookies.
This theme is to DJ music. Not just play a mix tape.
This would be equivalent to a guy throwing out all the cookies and saying, he ate them all and he won cause all the cookies were gone.
These guys missed the whole point of the contest, to DJ not press play and mime the whole thing.
I was commenting more on the terms of the contest and what was/wasn’t allowed–not trying to draw close analogies.
I do think it’s shysty as it’s not at all what I would do…Storm & Trooper put their reputation on the line. It was fair game, though.
I think it’s important to distinguish that, while what they did may have been within the rules of the contest, it’s pretty taboo in the DJing community itself. Not necessarily illegal, but not a cool move at all.

There were no judges, just the people on the dancefloor voted.
That’s the thing, it wasn’t a super serious comp, no real rules, most of them know each other and are friends and probably got together to put it on, and whoever won got to headline this years “Filthfest” which is the local all day EDM show in the summer.
Here was a post made by the President of DUB DUB U, (Western Washington’s EDM club) who put on the show, i think he handled things accordingly:
"So clearly there was some sort of discrepancy with last nights event, and as current President of Dub Dub U I feel that I should comment in some capacity on this discrepancy.
Personally, I was not at the event, sinus infections are a bitch…anyways… The event put on was intended to be a friendly dj competition/fundraiser for DECA. Some members of the club opted to create a more intricate act for this event, in the process they had to take steps which some of us may feel were inappropriate, i.e. Prefabricating a mix/Visual presentation, and playing that mix at the event. Instead of performing these parts independently and live.
As a club we do not condone this type of action, and I would like to personally apologize for any “false advertising” that may have occurred as to what you were obtaining with your ticket. I also cannot take responsibility for the decisions made by the DECA club and its officers.
That being said please refrain from utilizing these methods, in a competition setting in the future. However, in the sense of a concert, you may utilize whatever methods you see fit for performance. Although I would like to urge our performer members to try and innovate with their live act, and to avoid doing things that THEY feel will harm their credibility as well as the credibility of DUB DUB U.
The individuals in question have been contacted and spoken to, as have all of the club members who had participated last night.
I would like to applaud most of the discourse on our page about this issue. It is important for us to discuss what is appropriate, professional, and “fair” in the context of these events.
I am certain that this issue WILL NOT surface again, and we as a club WILL be taking steps to insure that not only our integrity as a club will be preserved but also the experience of our guests and performers will continue to progress towards top quality.
That being said, let us remember that we DID raise tons of money for a fellow AS club, we DID create a strong business relationship with another group on campus, we DID have a fairly kick ass event from all accounts, and we DO have another kick ass event this weekend, and many of our club members are participating in yet another kick ass event the weekend after.
So let us all collectively learn from each others mistakes and move forward.
