If the power of great music transcends the visual, why would you care about what performers are wearing? Do you find the mask takes away from your enjoyment of the music?
Not just saying that to be a smartass - genuinely wondering.
I can’t think of any of the DJs I listen to use masks.
I cut daft punk and dead mouse 5 slack because they are original ideas.
I don’t hate the masks. I just think they are gimmicky. I am there to dance and listen to good tunes mixed by a good DJ. This whole movement that house music is festival music is a bit strange to me. I think it’s that attitude that has given birth to alot more people using masks to differentiate themselves from other acts.
I agree that a lot of mask-wearing is gimmicky. There’s one producer - Anonym - who covers his face. I really dig his music. Redshape and SBTRKT are pretty good too, I would say.
I enjoyed this article on the subject:
“Whenever I put on the mask, most of the people in a club or at a festival like it a lot, and lots of them cheer, take pictures and videos. Of course, there’s always somebody who thinks that’s silly, but I never had a really bad reaction from somebody in the audience. The worst thing that happened was when somebody tried to steal the mask. That already happened twice, but fortunately they couldn’t manage to get the mask out of the club.”
if you are watching the DJ at a club, you’re doing it wrong…
Waiting for Kwal to post a hockey mask selfie…
From the article:
In 2009, DJ Bl3nd was catapulted into the public eye with his Club Mix YouTube video where he donned his signature mask. The video racked up over 80 million hits.
No, DJ Bl3nd got a bunch of bots to spike his YouTube views.
As for masks, the only people who ever got them right were Detroit artists who wore bandanas and balaclavas because they really did want to hide their identities to keep themselves and the music out of the mainstream.
I couldn’t watch it…too weird for this kid…
See avatar that’s me when playing live
Claptone’s Mask is awesome, he really pulls it off
Originally, covering your face was a way for the music to remain faceless. A way to appreciate the music on it’s own merit and substance. It was used to push attention away from the performer and back to the music where the audience should be focusing on. However, using masks as a technique for branding is the opposite of that mentality. it pulls attention to the performer. Early on, DJs and performers would wear bandanas and hoodies to hide their face.
Where I’m from, a mask was a dark window from a booth above the floor where. you only saw a djs shadow.
I agree… don’t get the whole mask thing. Save it for Halloween.
I give Deadmau5 credit for performing with that giant head, though. But, for the most part, I don’t want any extra thing on my head while I’m playing for 5+ hours. It gets hot enough.
I think Ten Walls will be investing in a mask.
