Dr Dre “beats” claim to have HD sound?

Does HD sound even exist?

It’s bad enough that Dr. Dre put his name on overpriced headphones, no doubt with a company that’s known for selling overpriced cables, but HD sound?

I’ve looked online and can’t find any proof that HD sound exists.

marketing

Kind of makes me angry that they just make things up.

Lot’s of people around here have them.

Just wanted to confirm it doesn’t exist so I can confidently start ripping into them.

they arnt lying as such, its just marketing. “HD” is just a matter of perspective tbh. As far as TV’s go it was coined anything above 720p (720p being the standard). The sound will be HD for pretty much all the people that buy the products as they will be used to the likes of the stock ipod headphones. to me, when i see people wearing beats it just shows that they put no effort whatsoever into actually researching headphones before they bought them, so imo they deserve to be ripped off. I struggle to hold my tongue when i meet people and we get talking about sound/music and they start telling me about their dre beats as if they are the best headphones created.

Why bother holding your tongue? Just let rip man!

These headphones have been a bugbear of mine for a while now. I went in to Comet/Currys and tried them out against my (£20) in-ear Sennheisers, and to be honest, I thought my buds were much better at isolating the outside noises. This in turn made for cleared highs and deeper bass.

I’m not known for being an audiophile (I’ve been known to use vinyl rips and 128 bit mp3’s) but I know when I’m being taken for a fool. Sadly some people will buy these things and tell you your equipment is inferior to theirs.

Their loss.

I didnt mean in a patronising sense, just that they are really happy with them.

Of course it does!

…and if my auntie had bllcks she’d be my uncle

I like them…for quickly identifying to me which people have absolutely no idea what theyre talking about, and more money than brains. (also applies to bose! cant wait to see bose make a $1000 “dj” headphone)

They’re not bad headphones… they are just over priced. I don’t get why everyone rips on people who buys them. It’s their money, they can do what they want with it. If they want to wear something for the brand, then why not let them do it? Its the same reason I wear Ray Bans instead of $5 knock offs that probably look almost identical.

I don’t understand where this thread is going, or why it’s going there. He simply asked about them being HD.

I agree that bose headphones may not be the best for DJing for their cost, but that doesn’t apply to other uses. I own a pair of noise cancelling headphones which i use to study and for long flight, and honestly I can’t hear anything with them on.

funny thing is that i once tried to compare the beats by dre to my headphones on a technical level and therefore searched for their specs. they can literally be found nowhere. nothing but really vague statements instead of numbers (frequency range, driver size and meterial etc.) hinting “OMG we haz good headphones”

There’s a picture of Dr. Dre on the box … how much more proof do you want that they are good and of course there’s such thing as HD sound its printed on the box … Pffft!

In fairness the Beats Pro’s look like they have a pretty slick build, just way way way overpriced and bloody heavy @ almost 1.5kg !!!

They studio’s & tours .. having tried them made me cough lumps for the price.

I have a $10 knockoff pair of tours which sound decent enough for a sub $50 pair of in-ears and as much as i’ll pay for a non-pro pair of iPod headphones thank you very much :stuck_out_tongue:

oh yes yes. stupid me. forgot that good sound is generated by swag.

And everyone knows Dr. Dre has a doctorate in sound engineering, how do you think he got the title dr? :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m a bit of a nerd when it comes to specs and details of my gizmos and gadgets. Never have I come across anything that would indicate headphones to be “HD”. You won’t magically here things with Beats that you don’t here with other headphones. MP3/WAV and headphones are very much like HDTV and Cable Box. Even if you have the most expensive HDTV on the planet, if you hook it up to a VCR, you’re not getting HD. Like headphones, if you plug it into a 64kbps mp3, your Beats will not magically convert it to 320Kbps or WAV.

Monster has ridiculous markup on things. I used to work at a Future Shop and if you wanted to make solid commission you sold customers Monster cables.

i personally find it hilarious seeing people pay 100$ for a single audiocable.

I suppose you could argue that ‘Standard Definition’ is CD quality, or 44.1kHz/16bit, so anything above that is ‘HD’. Pro Tools HD rigs support up to 192kBs/32bit so you could take that as a definition of HD.

Either way no headphone in the world can take a lower quality file and magically add information to make it better quality.

If the headphone was plugged into a D-A converter that could output ‘HD’ audio [ie, not an ipod or a laptop] then it would be reproducing ‘HD’ audio. But then so would a £1 pair of Bush in ears from 1993.

Thats just it. They ARE bad headphones. (Well, the pros are actually pretty good). The solos sound no better than ibuds, and snap if you stare at them for to long, yet they charge $100+? Studios are barely better.

Still, my biggest issue is beats owners who are cocky about the fact. I’ve actually had several comment on how much better beats were than my Shures (my walkarounds) while I’ve been using them. Good for you, you bought into the hype, now how would you like to listen to these headphones and actually here what decent music sounds like.

the problem is that they wouldn’t even believe you if they would have a listen on your headphones because they would still take the beats as a measure. “oh your headphones don’t have totally overblown bass. that’s no pro sound. beats FTW!!!111one1”

HD doesn’t really have any meaning or bearing on audio that’s already been converted to analogue. Sorry Dr Dre.
