Dubspot...

Dubspot…

Is it worth it? I’ve been DJing for over a year now and looking to take the Digital DJing with Traktor Pro 2 program.
I really want to, but i just don’t know if I can drop 800 bucks for it. Thoughts?

I’d never do it personally… You can learn all of the same stuff on forums and on youtube.

What are you hoping to get out of it specifically?

Ever since I’ve started DJing, I’ve learned from youtube and DJTT. I really would like to try something different to spice it up a little bit. I’m not really looking to get anything specific out of it, more of an overall learning experience with Shiftee and Endo. There’s always more to learn anyway…

Well, most of us on this forum pretty much think Shiftee’s a twat (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iy96Al2iEcQ)… And DJ-wise I’ve never seen endo do anything interesting personally.

But yeah, if you think you’re a dependent learner that needs that sort of thing, go for it.
I’d suggest the alternative is watching performance videos (ean golden, DJ Craze, etc.) and figuring out/asking people, how they do what they’re doing.

Personally I think Shiftee is a cool guy…but to each his own i guess. Thanks for your input, still unsure of what i’m going to do though.

fader you must be talking about the 1% of the people here.

Shiftiee is a don and is loved here.

I’m not sure the collective would remotely agree with faders opinion. Shiftee won DMC for a reason, hes pretty innovative with his stuff at times, albeit he tries a little too hard to witty, its all in fun.

As for dubspot not being worth it and learning everything from youtube, im sorry but thats like saying I can get my bachelors from university of phoenix online and its legit.

Sure some people can learn it all online, but I can tell you a lot of people try that approach and fail miserably. Additionally if living in NY the contacts that can gained from the school is very very helpful. Many have come back saying they learned a lot, but made great connects with many others in the scene on NY.

Shiftee’s a great DJ, he did win the DMC for a reason… I just said he was a twat… There have been several threads about this, and from that sampling i guess I’ve assumed the majority think he’s a twat. “Twat” is pretty subjective, and I was just making a joke.

And FFS dude, you’re putting words in my mouth. I said that if the dude learns like that, then he should go to dubspot, if not, consider learning online.

Thanks for the help guys…Has anyone here done any of the programs?

I did a few of Dubspot’s one-day seminars and can tell you they were very helpful. Doing an intensive program would be fantastic; well worth the money if you can afford it, imho.

i visited the school a few weeks back, let me tell you, that place looks very cool. yes you can learn from home, but you don’t get nearly the same experience. there’s also a networking factor involved. you meet different people already involved in the scene and learn from them. very cool little spot.

I really don’t think it’d be worth it. Maybe if you’re actually in their physical location. And maybe some of their production stuff is better. But if all of their DJ instructors are as clueless or specifically harmful as Endo…I’d avoid it like the plague.

Forgive my ignorance but what’s so worrisome about Endo?

Based on the videos he’s put out…he doesn’t understand gain staging, how to read meters, how mixers work, phrasing, or how to structure a set…he doesn’t use his gear to its fullest and buys more shit that duplicates functionality without actually using it…his Maschine mapping is wasteful and cumbersome without actually doing anything interesting…he can’t even pretend to use Live and Traktor together with how he suggests you do some things…and just watching him move looks like someone who read a script for a tv show about DJing, didn’t practice at all, and thinks that’s good enough.

Basically…he’s getting paid to tell people information that’s explicitly wrong……and has nothing artistic to show from it.

He’s a scourge on the community and a waste of time.

Spending a week goofing off watching youtube videos will at least make you look like you know more than he does.

I think the only thing he has to teach is how to get a gig teaching other people a set of skills that you don’t have yourself.

Well I live in Northern New Jersey, so the trip wouldn’t be too bad.

A pox on his house!!!

If I had the money and more importantly, the time, I would definitely do it - no question. The web is great but there are things that can be better taught when there is a two way interaction and the teacher can see what you are doing and help guide and correct. I think for highly tactile disciplines like turntablism, this would be brilliant. I for one, have hit a wall with scratching and need someone to watch what I am doing and help me nail those 1/2/3 click flares and flare combos.

As for Shiftee being a twat - These kinds of comments are becoming more prevalent around here with the new kids. It needs to stop. End of.

Thank you.(I agree 100% with you) I think I’ve decided to take a weekend course at their location, and see how I like it.

It could benefit you so why not? Your gaining more knowledge that you didn’t have. If you can afford it; Go for it!!!

i think you could always learn a lot faster from people who know there stuff. Youtube is great, but asking specific questions and getting specific answers is way more efficient. If you have the cash, go to school. I learned Ableton on Youtube, but I always learn something new when I visit my Ableton guru friend down the street.
