I did my best to recreate the mapping Ean used for the S2 release video. It isn’t 100% the same, as I did some small changes to make it more to my liking. But I think you will be satisfied with the results.
Update for Version 1
To use this TSI, the “Load Button” needs to be changed to Jog Wheel FX. This is selectable under the S4 settings in the preferences.
The Jogs only work on Decks A and B respectively.
As I have played more with this setup, I’ve noticed the effects for Deck B aren’t really as nice as Deck A. I’m actually thinking of just making the effects the same for Deck B and make a new TSI for that.
Just came back, didn’t open the file, but I think that statement is not true. You can use the jog for either all the samples or each individual sample.
?
Hmmm…ok. But would that be useful? I mean using the jogs on samples?
If so, I can change the switching function of the jog wheel with the C and D deck buttons to another button. It just seemed the most logical at the time, because that button is right next to the jog wheel.
I’ll admit I am a beginner to all this. So there is most definitely room for improvement and I appreciate your constructive comments.
Actually thinking about Yul’s comment and playing Ean’s video in my mind through again, (yeah, I’ve remembered about everything), I’d venture to now say, this ain’t gonna work in a performance environment..
So you can use it at the moment just to see how the effects work. But I am going to redo the button to switch the jogs to FX mode.
Ok the following is without any intention of being mean or whatever, right? (that’s a kind of disclaimer as last time I made a remark to someone else I may have done it without gloves so…).
If you didn’t preview all that can affect the load buttons, deck layers buttons, jogwheel, browse mode, copy mode, etc, etc.. and all interactions of all of them together, the mapping would not be correct (at all). For example, and talking about samples, if you didn’t preview the related modifiers of activating individual sample(s) for the jogwheel, the mapping can’t be trusted.
Well, looking at this a bit more in detail. It looks like I am going to have to use the Traktor built in “Load Button for Jog Wheel FX” Function. There is no other way to actually override the standard jog wheel functionality. The only thing I have to figure out now is how to override the standard FX adjustment the jog wheel makes. Anyone have a tip?
Ok, I’ve figured the override of the FX on the Jogs.
I’ve changed my TSI around to what I think is the only way this setup will work. You have to change the load button preference to Jog Wheel FX. Now the TSI works and doesn’t mess up any other functions. The new file is in the first post.
I’ve also noticed, the effects for Deck B are ok, but I’m not too keen on the Lo-Fi effect and I’ve actually turned it down some over what I think Ean used.
Anyhow, hope some people will play with it and give me some feedback. I think I might just make the effects the same for both decks and make a new file.
Ok, still not perfect. Found the jogs are also used for selecting songs in browse mode. Not good while you are holding an effect and jamming with it and also looking for a new song to load quickly. That shouldn’t happen very often, but it could, so I’ve overridden that function. New TSI to come.
And I’ve also now noticed, this whole concept can be improved for more “DJ” like workflow. Like having the effects on the jogs in effect banks 3 and 4 and still have the effect banks 1 and 2 workable with the S4’s effect controls.
I am also thinking of adding different groupings of effects and making them switchable on the fly. There has to be more effects other than beatmasher and peak filter which sound good together, when the jog controls one or more of the effect amounts. The concept is sooo cool though.
Interested to see what you have in store…I think overriding the browse function may not be so helpful but I guess I don’t know how you are overriding it…Can the browse function still be used?
Yes, you can still use the rotary knob in the middle, which is what you’d use, if you weren’t in the browse mode. Also, I’ve set the jogs up so that if you aren’t in the FX jog wheel mode, the jog will work again in the browse mode. What I found out to be an issue though is, if you press the load button in browse mode, thinking to load a song, which actually still works, it screws up the Jog FX settings. I need to think about that one and how to compensate for it. It sure would be nice, if you could just say, this function, STOP WORKING in the controller manager and possibly even be able to reconfigure it with something else. Now, it seems you have to trick Traktor to stop certain functions and that is sort of counterproductive in some cases.
