I tried to learn how to do this with the Maschine. Couldn’t figure out how to do it to save my life lol.
Really want to learn this technique though. I remember hearing it during Hardwell’s ultra set (wasn’t DJ’d, part of a remix)
Cute. Wish I had key analysis software in the 90’s when I played top 40.
Rattle into Funkytown is fucking epic. Gonna do that one next week methinks ![]()
Nice!
I’m a really big fan of this toneplay series djcity has been putting out lately. You guys should definitely check out the other dj’s featured on there if you haven’t already.
I’ll be studying the FUCK out of that video.
Dynamix is another guy that has been rockin the tone play. Just and FYI if your really into tone play “RE-Key” your tracks makes things easier and more creative than trying to find tones that will match… The proper musical term is “Transposing” Learned this sight reading sheet music that was written for another instrument.
So when he triggers the pads are those preset cue points throughout the song?
No, he’s triggering samples; either on the Remix/Sample Decks, or on Ableton.
gotcha is ableton allowed in thre3style though?
It’s not a complex setup. He’s just using serato with his mpd assigned to cue points. The work comes from trying to find the proper cue points that allow you to jam out different melodies, no mixed in key, or mashup software will be able to do that for you.
OK cool I thought he was on Serato. So is it cue points or the sampler that he uses? I’d like to start practicing more tone play routines.
If anyone wants to help me figure out the “Take On Me” to “Wanksta” that would be great
hey guys, glad you like the series! definitely check out the previous episodes featuring dynamix, morse code and kidd spin.
as far as zack’s setup, it’s like RDEJ47 said, super simple setup just using serato and the MPD as a midi controller to control cue’s and loops that he setup before hand.
sorry for the bump on an old post. figured i’d rather ask here, then create a new thread.
I would love to create some toneplay routines, but what’s holding me back is actually getting the exact one shot samples with space in between them. It’s pretty difficult to use original tracks, what with all the other drums etc, and it dosent give enough timing between different sounds.
How would I go about getting ndividual samples/notes?
listen real carefully through the whole song and try to find similar sounds that are further apart. Usually there will be a part of the intro/outro with it, or at least an end of a verse with no vocals over the instrumentation.
Maybe you could try playing the tones as loops (and throw some FX over it to not hear that it’s actually a loop)?
I haven’t tried it but just as an idea or possible approach…
mad zach did this in one of his tutorials, I think it was the how-to-make-a-remix-using-an-existing-song video where he played around in maschine. It sounded pretty nice, If I remember correctly.
yeah, you’re right ![]()
didn’t know that video but here it is:
the part about looping starts @ 5:12
hope it helps…
